Job description
As a Systems Engineer, you will work on high-quality optical systems for integrated photonics, space-based atmospheric monitoring, opto-acoustic sensor systems, optical satellite communication, medical devices, quantum technologies, structural health monitoring and instrumentation for the semiconductor industry. You will work on an Optics team of 60 colleagues., As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will guide the development and realisation of optical systems, which ranges from large telescopes to tiny photocis integrated circuits (PICs) on a microchip. The successful creation on these systems require technical leadership and insight into the elements of the system, as well as the interaction between these elements (not only products - hardware/software/firmware/ - but also processes, people and information).
- You will connect all the necessary disciplines within the project team.
- You will ensure the result of the technical projects, as well as the successful delivery of the system.
- You will minimise technical risks.
- You will ensure the satisfaction of customers and other stakeholders.
- You will steer the development of technology roadmaps.
- You will actively contribute to the acquisition of new projects, proactively identifying and bringing forward new opportunities.
- You will also be in regular contact with optical manufacturing, thermal and mechanical engineers, acoustics experts, and calibration and integration specialists from the Opto-mechatronics, Acoustics, Nano-instrumentation, Quantum Technology and Space Systems Engineering departments., At S[&]T we contribute to a safer life on earth by translating space data into valuable and actionable insights. We oversee data from instruments to application, and apply our expertise within our software frameworks, information products and consultancy.
Our society relies on space and scientific instruments for climate change monitoring, navigation, defence and national security, and other crucial services we all use in our daily lives. These instruments produce an enormous quantity of complex data, and our goal is to unlock its value.
We have more than 20 years of experience working on instrument calibration, the creation of data quality monitoring tools, the development of real-time data processing frameworks, and the development of application-specific algorithms. With this, we help organisations, governments and industries to strengthen their information position and thereby improve their decision making. We focus on the following domains: Space & Science, Defence & Security, Environment & Sustainability, and High-Tech Consulting.
Requirements
- You have an educational background at least at master's level in Applied Physics or Engineering, with specialisation in Optics.
- You have working experience as a System Engineer for at least 10 years within different contexts (a broad knowledge spectrum , various domains, various TRL levels and/or various types of clients).
- You can work both as a generalist (multidisciplinary knowledge) and as a specialist (domain knowledge).
- You master Systems Engineering Management techniques (requirements management, engineering management and planning, project and system breakdown, estimating and scheduling engineering costs and planning, risk management and mitigation).
- You have a proven track record of bringing experts from multiple disciplines together to jointly develop beyond-state-of-the art-systems.
- Able to motivate and guide a team of technical experts, even in very complex situations.
- Previous experience in development of (optical) satellite communication systems and/or photonic integrated circuits (PICs) would be an advantage for this position but is not a requirement.
- Want to continuously improve the quality of your work and share best practices and support the development of other Systems Engineers.
- Are able to lead the development of IP/patents.
- Able to communicate fluently in English (you will have many international colleagues).
- You have great communication skills and are great at stakeholder management.
