Job description

The role of this position will be to design architectures and implement communication, storage, and computation infrastructures for these projects and related ones of the group. In particular, we will use distributed databases and streaming technology such as MongoDB and Kafka. The architecture should also provide data services to intelligence and visualization platforms. The person in this role will manage and supervise junior team members to carry out these tasks. Key Duties

  • Lead the development and innovation line on distributed storage and streaming processing in the group.
  • Design a suitable backend architecture based on the needs of storage, computation, and communication.
  • Write code to collect, store, and organize data obtained from sensors and devices, public sources and private collaborators.
  • Safeguard data and system security
  • Learn and transfer knowledge and technology to other projects in the group
  • Lead and manage a small team of engineers and developers to carry out the tasks
  • Attend technical meetings, and produce reports for milestones and deliverables of the project., * A cover/motivation letter with a statement of interest in English, clearly specifying for which specific area and topics the applicant wishes to be considered. Development of the recruitment process

The selection will be carried out through a competitive examination system ("Concurso-Oposición"). The recruitment process consists of two phases:

  • Curriculum Analysis: Evaluation of previous experience and/or scientific history, degree, training, and other professional information relevant to the position. - 40 points
  • Interview phase: The highest-rated candidates at the curriculum level will be invited to the interview phase, conducted by the corresponding department and Human Resources. In this phase, technical competencies, knowledge, skills, and professional experience related to the position, as well as the required personal competencies, will be evaluated. - 60 points. A minimum of 30 points out of 60 must be obtained to be eligible for the position.

The recruitment panel will be composed of at least three people, ensuring at least 25% representation of women.

In accordance with OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for each vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will begin the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. At a minimum, a personality questionnaire as well as a technical exercise will be conducted during the process.

The panel will make a final decision, and all individuals who participated in the interview phase will receive feedback with details on the acceptance or rejection of their profile.

Requirements

  • PhD in Informatics, Computer Science, or Engineering will be a plus
  • Degree in Informatics, Computer Science, or Engineering.
  • MsC in Informatics, Computer Science, or Engineering.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
  • Server-side programming languages: Python, Java, Node, or Scala.
  • We will value equivalent hands-on experience (3+ years) in backend development and system administration
  • We will value especially knowledge and experience with cloud computing storage services and technologies (virtual machines, dockers), and in particular, the Microsoft Azure platform
  • Experience with online security best practices
  • Experience in streaming architectures (Kafka, Flink, etc.)
  • Strong experience with relational and non-relational databases (e.g. MongoDB, Cassandra) (5+ years)
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
  • Experience with distributed computing and storage infrastructures (e.g. Spark, Hadoop) is a plus.
  • We will value experience with applied Big Data and distributed computing projects and experience setting up data-processing projects in production
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish.
  • Competences
  • Strong initiative to work on a challenging multidisciplinary innovation project involving talking to people in many fields.
  • Good communication skills, especially in producing internal documentation (manuals, white papers).
