Head of Data Science

We're looking for a Head of Data Science to make Algal Bloom credible fast and ensure our outputs are defensible. You'll lead model strategy and validation, ensure our drivers and forecasts stand up to scrutiny, and shape how we communicate uncertainty to customers. You'll work closely with Product and Engineering under the guidance of our CTO.

What You'll Do

· Establish baselines, validation plans, metrics and controls for modelling work.

· Define a practical bloom labelling strategy and clear uncertainty communication.

· Sanity-check driver scoring, run leakage checks, and back-test across reservoirs.

· Design model monitoring and refresh cadence to keep outputs trustworthy over time.

· Validate that technical models align to driver objectives and underpinning research/science.

· Collaborate with product to translate scientific outputs into usable workflows and decisions.

Do you have experience in Spark?, · Strong grounding in data science techniques and applied research (modelling, evaluation, experimentation).

· Relevant degree background (e.g., microbiology, chemistry, environmental science or similar).

· Water industry experience and/or familiarity with lab sampling and water quality monitoring.

· Geospatial analysis experience.

· Understanding of meteorology / climatology signals and how they affect inland waters.

· Working knowledge of data lake architecture, ingestion patterns and model design.

· Python, Spark and notebook-based development experience / understanding

· Clear communicator: able to explain trade-offs, assumptions and uncertainty to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
