Job description

Prudential & Analytics (P&A) is on an exciting transformation journey, modernising regulatory reporting, risk analytics, and model-ready data through investment in people, data, and cloud technology!

In this role, you'll lead high-performing engineering teams to deliver secure, compliant, and scalable data services on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). You'll set strong engineering standards, modernise legacy analytics platforms, and translate complex prudential risk requirements into well-designed, cloud-native solutions!

This is a great opportunity for a hands-on Lead Software Engineer who thrives at the intersection of data engineering and software engineering and enjoys solving complex problems in a regulated UK banking environment.

What you'll do

  • Translate business needs into practical technical solutions.
  • Own engineering plans and delivery within Agile teams.
  • Drive engineering decisions across modern cloud engineering stack.
  • Embed CI/CD and quality gates and champion data engineering excellence.
  • Partner across DevOps, QA, Security and Product.

Requirements

  • Proven data engineering experience including designing data models, normalisation, and entity relationship for analytics at scale.
  • Hands-on building ETL/ELT pipelines and orchestrations (ideally Airflow/Cloud Composer) on GCP.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals: version control (Git/GitHub), PR discipline, code reviews, automated testing (unit/integration), and CI/CD.
  • Proficiency in Python for data engineering and service development; writing clean, efficient, well-structured code.
  • Practical data governance mentality: access controls, lineage, cataloguing, and data quality embedded into delivery.
  • Experience in a regulated environment (banking/financial services ideal) and familiarity with prudential/regulatory data needs (e.g., Basel III, CRD IV).
  • People leadership: coaching engineers, setting standards, aligning teams around outcomes, and creating momentum.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GKE/Kubernetes (containerising and operating services) and Cloud Storage patterns.
  • Product knowledge within Retail / Commercial bank and the products / tooling in place currently to allow for discussions on architecture design and migration of data.
  • Experience with AI-enabled software development and engineering.
  • Familiarity with data product thinking (domains, contracts, SLAs/SLOs).
  • Observability for data systems (e.g., metrics, alerting, lineage, anomaly detection).
  • Performance tuning in BigQuery (partitioning, clustering, materialized views).
  • Experience modernising legacy analytics codebases into cloud-native pipelines.
