Job description

Do you want to define the strategy, standards and methodologies that enable our labs to ship faster and safer across GCP and our private OCP platform?

We're the Colleague Channels Platform-the team powering the technology that supports colleagues in Branches, Contact Centres and Operations. We deliver shared services and cross-platform capabilities, working with teams across the Group to create simpler, more connected colleague experiences. Our Cloud team sets the standards for automation, pipelines, infrastructure and monitoring, leading the adoption of modern DevOps practices in collaboration with central and feature teams!

This is a hands-on leadership role: you'll set direction and standards while staying close to the engineering-designing, building and evolving critical platform capabilities with your team!

As Lead Engineer in the Cloud Team, you will:

  • Shape the DevOps strategy and roadmap while staying hands-on-designing, validating and guiding solutions, anticipating demand, and adopting emerging Group tooling to improve pace, quality and safety.
  • Promote a culture of enablement, ensuring DevOps capabilities are federated and teams can own, develop, test and deliver their features independently.
  • Lead the design and evolution of CI/CD pipelines, release automation and monitoring patterns, contributing deeply to shared Kubernetes and Istio platforms across GCP and OCP.
  • Define and apply platform guardrails and standards that enhance security and support fast, safe delivery.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with labs and central teams, coaching on build and release standards and unblocking delivery through practical, hands-on support.
  • Coach and develop engineers within the team to help them grow their skills and impact.
  • Evaluate new technologies and approaches, turning successful ideas into reusable platform patterns.
  • Stay technically involved where it matters most-prototyping new capabilities, reviewing complex designs, and supporting teams through critical delivery and issues.

Requirements

  • Strong mix of hands-on engineering expertise and strategic leadership-able to design and evolve complex DevOps and platform capabilities while setting direction and enabling others.
  • Practical experience across GCP and OCP, including delivering cloud infrastructure and environments.
  • Deep, hands-on knowledge of DevOps tooling (GitHub, Harness, Jenkins, IBM DevOps Deploy, Terraform, Dynatrace, SonarQube, Nexus, Aqua, Python) with a track record of adopting and embedding new tools.
  • Experience leading, mentoring and developing engineering teams.
  • Skilled at managing platform-wide priorities and stakeholders.
  • Driven to enable teams to deliver safely and at pace.
  • A leader who stays close to the work-still coding, building and troubleshooting.

Useful additional experience

  • Software engineering across microservices, web apps and the full delivery lifecycle.
  • Automated testing and quality engineering.
  • Service operations, including monitoring, alerting and SLI/SLOs.
  • Databases, schema management, streaming and messaging technologies.
  • Networking fundamentals (segmentation, subnetting, policies, firewalls, routing).
