Flexible working will be considered on a case-by-case basis., The Data, Analysis and Insight team plays a pivotal role in supporting a whole range of senior leaders across the business through reporting, analysis and insights. Our work supports the organisation's overall strategy and empowers senior leaders to make strategic, data driven business decisions. In December 2021 we published our Data Strategy, setting out HMCTS's commitment to becoming a data driven organisation.

As part of this strategy, HMCTS has invested in a cloud-based strategic data platform to transform the ways in which we work with data and enable us to add more value than ever to the organisation and the public. This platform is now technically complete, and we are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our team and help us exploit our new technology.
This role will be based in our Data Management and Engineering team responsible for holding, curating, and protecting our data to drive value for our organisation both now and into the future.
Your role as the Senior Data Engineer encompasses several key aspects (but not limited to):
- Contribute to the delivery of physical data models and views required for data exploiters to enable visualisation of metrics and the provision of insightful analysis for data science projects.
- Develop data ingestion and transformation processes for new and existing data sources.
- Work with subject matter experts to develop and implement the business rules and definitions underpinning measures, metrics and KPIs.
- Collaborate effectively with the operational colleagues across the organisation, internal project teams and other stakeholders to gather, refine and deliver requirements to meet business needs.
- Act as technical lead for one or more HMCTS jurisdictions and overall data management framework.
- Embed improved ways of working with data across the wider team, including automation of manual tasks and data assurance., You will have access to a wide range of tools to continually develop and enhance your Data skills, such as access to Microsoft Azure training courses via our partnership with Microsoft, online training such as DataCamp or Pluralsight, webinars, courses, one-to-one coaching and access to a large peer-support network., The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.
Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone's circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.
For nationally advertised role: all successful candidates will be appointed to the nearest viable office nearest to their home postcode and on its respective pay scale. This will be at either a HQ building (subject to desk allocation, a Justice Collaboration Centre (JCC) or a Justice Satellite Office (JSO) - See Map. All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity).
For current MoJ employees, your base location will need to be changed to the nearest viable office (to your home postcode), either at a HQ building, JCC or JSO within the National Office Network and moved its location's respective pay scale (any legacy arrangements/locations will need to be amended).
Some of MoJ's terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.
MoJ candidates who are on a specialist grade, will be able to retain their grade on lateral transfer.
All candidates who are currently in receipt of Mark Time / Pay Protection should ensure they are familiar with the new policy on permanent and temporary promotion which can be found on the employee intranet.
Flexible working hours
The Ministry of Justice offers a flexible working system in many offices. Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week. MoJ welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs. All applications for part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns will be considered in accordance with the MoJ's Flexible Working policy., Interviews expected late April/Early May - subject to change Behaviours Changing and Improving Delivering at Pace Technical You will be asked to provide a presentation of no more than 10 minutes providing technical evidence of your understanding of Dimensional Data Modelling and Data Engineering as aligned to the Government Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework (GDD). The full presentation brief will be sent prior to your interview.
Requirements
- Good understanding of Data Warehouse techniques, including dimensional data modelling and relational database design and concepts (e.g. Kimball).
- Strong SQL skills and experience working with databases such as Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server.
- A proactive and motivated approach to problem-solving, with strong skills in troubleshooting complex data issues and delivering effective, scalable solutions
- Experience of transforming data against required business rules and data models, or data storage and analysis requirements, and loading data in various storage platforms.
- Experience of working with data and databases, ideally involving the development of new and existing data sources in a Data Warehouse environment.

Annual Leave
Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years' service.
There is also a scheme to allow qualifying staff to buy or sell up to three days leave each year. Additional paid time off for public holidays and 1 privilege day. Leave for part-time and job share posts will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.
