Job description

We are looking for one or two software engineers to join the team which is implementing control software for the ELT and its instruments. The CSE department comprises a team of almost 50 engineers organized in 5 groups and is responsible for the definition, design and implementation of complex control systems for ESO's telescopes and instruments. The main effort in CSE is spent for the ELT programme, but CSE is also supporting the other ESO programmes using a matrix organization.

The Control System of the ELT is split into the central control system which is implemented by ESO in house. Most of the local control systems are delivered as part of industry contracts. The CSE team is responsible to integrate all components of the ELT control system first in a test environment in ESO's headquarter in Garching and later on at the ELT construction site.

Key Competencies

You have worked at least 3 years in software development with C++ and/or Python under Linux, ideally implementing distributed control systems. You are familiar with modern software development environments and a modern tool chain. You will be member of the team integrating local control software delivered by suppliers with the central control software and other local control software. Your responsibility will cover the definition and implementation of test cases and the evaluation of the test results. Another aspect of your work will be, to maintain and extend CSE's software development and test environment DevOps tool chain.

If you are interested, there could be the possibility to join the ELT AIV (Assembly, Integration and Verification) team in Chile for 1-2 years.

Requirements

If you have worked with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), especially from Beckhoff and Siemens, this will be an asset. Knowledge of concrete tools in our tool chain like Git/Gitlab, Puppet, Ansible or Jenkins would be an advantage., University degree in computer science or equivalent., Excellent command of the English language is essential; a working knowledge of German or Spanish would be an advantage.

Benefits & conditions

We offer an attractive remuneration package including a competitive salary (free of income tax for applicants from ESO member states), comprehensive pension scheme and medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial help in relocating your family and support to place your child/children in daycare.
