Job description

Join Open Systems as a Systems Developer in Email Security! Work on a scalable, global solution for secure connectivity.

Tasks

  • Design and maintain email security components from concept to production.
  • Integrate third-party products into our Linux-based cloud stacks.
  • Develop public APIs and enhance monitoring capabilities., As a Systems Developer in the Email Security Team, you will build and operate a highly scalable, globally deployed email security solution. This is a builder-operator hybrid role: you will design, implement, deploy, and maintain the components you create, from initial concept through production operations.

You will be part of the core team developing email services for customer base. Your work will include:

  • Developing filtering plugins, internal tools, and management infrastructure
  • Integrating third-party products (open source such as Postfix, or OEM components like proprietary malware engines) into our Linux-based and cloud stacks
  • Building and maintaining public APIs for email processing and configuration
  • Extending monitoring, alerting, and log aggregation capabilities
  • Troubleshooting and debugging production systems
  • Life-cycle management and optimization of existing deployments, including cloud-native environments

You will own your components end-to-end. Operational excellence matters as much as code quality.

This role is not a fit if you are looking for: a pure software development position where someone else handles deployment and operations, or a system administration role focused on configuration and support rather than development. We value both specializations. This role simply requires solid foundations of both areas in one person.

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science or related; 2+ years experience.
  • Proficient in scripting languages like Bash and Python.
  • Experience with Linux systems and email security protocols., * Higher education (ETH, university, FH) in Computer Science or a related field
  • 2+ years of professional experience in a relevant role
  • Proficiency in software development with scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Perl, Python) and a concurrent compiled language (e.g., Go, C++, C#, Rust)
  • Experience with Linux or another UNIX-based operating system, including comfort working at the system level
  • Knowledge of email protocols and security standards: SMTP, TLS, DNS, DKIM, DMARC
  • Familiarity with software and system testing practices
  • Understanding of monitoring and observability principles
  • Fluent in English
  • Clear communication skills and ability to work both in a team and independently

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with proprietary email backends such as Microsoft 365
  • Experience using LLM-assisted development tools
  • Knowledge of container and cloud technologies (Kubernetes)
  • Experience with general network protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP)

In addition to your work in a Development team, you will become certified as a Mission Control Engineer, providing you with knowledge in a wide area covering networking and security topics. This will give you the opportunity to visit our Network Operations Centers in Honolulu, Hawaii for 3-month deployments.
