Job description
The Data Scientist leads the design and delivery of advanced analytical, statistical and machine learning models that support improved patient outcomes, proactive decision-making and population health management. Acting as a specialist within MPFT's modernised Data Platforms & Engineering function, the postholder strengthens the Trust's capacity to move from descriptive reporting toward predictive, preventative and personalised insights.The role supports the MOC aim to modernise the data function, integrate PHM analytics, introduce AI-enabled capabilities, and increase analytical capacity without increasing corporate overhead., * Develop predictive, descriptive, and prescriptive models using Python, R, SQL and cloud technologies.
- Lead Population Health Management (PHM) analytics and risk-stratification approaches.
- Integrate, clean, and transform data from multiple clinical and corporate systems.
- Contribute to data quality by design and ensure model integrity and reproducibility.
- Oversee the Population Health Information Officer(s).
- Translate complex analytics into actionable insights for clinicians and leaders.
- Support Trust adoption of AI governance, interoperable data standards, and responsible innovation., The Data Scientist works at the intersection of data engineering, analytics and digital transformation. The postholder develops productionready analytical models aligned to the Trusts cloud and enterprise data architecture, enabling predictive insight into demand, risk, outcomes, and health inequalities.A key aspect of the role includes building the Trusts PHM capability, supporting integrated care priorities, and using linked datasets to identify unmet need, target interventions and evaluate services.The role reinforces the Trusts aim of enhancing analytical capability while consolidating duplicated roles, modernising tooling, and embedding automation, AI safety and responsible data use. Main responsibilities:
- Deliver machine learning models, risk stratification tools and forecasting models.
- Use advanced data manipulation techniques to extract insights from structured and unstructured data.
- Lead PHM analytics and ensure alignment with national frameworks and ICS priorities.
- Ensure all models are reproducible, versioncontrolled and fully documented.
- Support data quality improvement and alignment to validated datasets.
- Integrate models into BI dashboards to support operational and clinical decisionmaking.
- Advise on responsible AI, ethical use of data, and compliance with Trust policies.
- Mentor analytical colleagues and support upskilling across the wider analytics community.
Requirements
- Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or related discipline or equivalent qualifications, knowledge, or experience.
- Evidence of continuous professional development in data analytics or machine learning.
- Knowledge of NHS data standards, governance, and data security requirements.
- Formal training or experience in statistical analysis, Python, or R.
Desirable
- MSc or PhD in Data Science, Health Informatics, or Public Health Analytics.
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Scientist / Databricks Certified Professional.
- Training in population health analytics
Experience
Essential
- Experience in developing and deploying predictive and statistical models.
- Proven experience using SQL, Python, or R for data analysis and automation.
- Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams including clinicians and managers.
- Experience developing or supporting dashboards, reports, or analytical tools.
Desirable
- Experience working within the NHS or public sector health analytics.
- Experience in multi-organisational data sharing or system-level analytics.
- Experience mentoring or supervising analysts.

- Strong understanding of data modelling, statistics, and machine learning.
- Understanding of NHS datasets, data flows, and definitions (NHS Data Dictionary).
- Ability to interpret and explain complex data clearly for non-technical audiences.
- Understanding of Information Governance, ethics, and AI explainability.
- Excellent problem-solving, organisational, and communication skills.

- Cloud computing (Azure ML, AWS SageMaker), APIs, Git
- Data engineering or DevOps awareness
- Familiarity with interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7, OpenEHR).
