Job description

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Design Engineer specialising in Temporary Works Design to join a multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the temporary works design across various sectors, including working platforms, cofferdams, retaining walls, scaffolding and access, demolition, formwork and falsework, steelwork, and concrete design. You will prepare preliminary and detailed design analyses, calculations, specifications, and related documentation for both civil and structural temporary and permanent works.

The role requires effective communication and collaboration with other disciplines, construction teams, and clients, confidently presenting and defending design proposals. You will challenge existing methods and deliver value engineering solutions while supporting and mentoring junior team members. Managing and completing civil and structural designs within budget and programme constraints, including change control and ensuring design consistency across disciplines, is a key responsibility.

Participation in internal and external design reviews and ensuring design acceptance by clients is essential. The role demands strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to manage complex design packages from concept through to delivery.

Requirements

Extensive experience in Temporary Works Design (working platforms, cofferdams, retaining walls, scaffolding, demolition, formwork, falsework) Civil and structural design expertise (steelwork and concrete) Ability to prepare detailed design calculations, analyses, and specifications Strong communication skills with clients and multidisciplinary teams Value engineering and problem-solving capabilities Experience managing design within budget and programme constraints Change control and design consistency management Mentoring and supporting junior engineers Participation in design reviews and client design acceptance Confident and authoritative client-facing presence

Software/Tools Structural analysis and design software (e.g., STAAD.Pro, Tekla, AutoCAD) BIM tools (e.g., Revit) Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Certifications & Standards Chartered Engineer status (ICE or IStructE preferred) CSCS card Temporary Works Designer/Coordinator certification (desirable) Knowledge of relevant design codes and standards (e.g., BS 5975)
