Job description
This role is part of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency's (DVLA's) Centre of Digital Excellence, looking to build skills across digital roles. You will undertake formal learning alongside building skills and experience in one of DVLA's Data Teams., Data Engineers are Software Engineers who specialise in development of data products and services. At DVLA, as Data Engineers, we use modern cloud technologies to provide the business with a data platform which allows us to get value from the data we collect and store. It is a role that requires a significant set of technical skills including various programming languages like Python and SQL. It is also a role that requires good understanding of data, and collaboration skills.
This programme will combine classroom training with hands on experience, designed to teach you the skills you need to succeed in a long-term career in IT.
Successful candidates will spend up to one day a week in a classroom environment. The rest of their time will provide on-the-job experience, working directly with teams as part of the DVLA's IT community. This is a fantastic opportunity where you will grow your wider skills such as teamwork, resilience, communication, and problem solving.
Your responsibilities will include, but aren?t limited to:
- Learning how to help build tools, services and pipelines to make data available to analysts, data scientists and report builders
- Helping to build robust and scalable automated data pipelines and learning how to use Infrastructure as code to deploy Azure cloud infrastructure
- Supporting the implementation of data flows to connect operational systems, data for analytics and business intelligence (BI) system
- Supporting the Data Engineering team to document source-to-target mappings and build data streaming systems
- Supporting the development of business intelligence reports that can be reuse
You will have the opportunity to build/develop your data and software development skills in cloud platforms including Azure and AWS working with programming languages like Python and SQL, work with streaming and batch type data processing solutions. You will learn modern, team based software development practices like Agile, DevOps, pair and team programming, automated testing and test driven development., For permanent Civil Servants, this role is only available on loan, so you must have your home departments approval to return to them at the end of the loan before you apply. There is no opportunity for a permanent Civil Servant to take on this role as a fixed term appointment. OGD applicants will be appointed on an inward loan and subject to the terms of the agreed inward loan. Internal candidates will return to their previous post at the end of the loan period, which will need to be agreed with your line manager in advance.

Staff currently working in DVLA who are not able to secure a role following completion of the course of the programme would be redeployed back into the agency in line with the posts available at the time at their substantive grade. If there are no suitable posts available at that time then DVLA redeployment processes will apply. This would be underpinned by a loan agreement.
Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements
This role is full time only. Full time roles at DVLA consist of 37 hours per week.
This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.
The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.

Requirements

We are looking for two driven individuals to get involved in this exciting Degree Apprenticeship Programme. Furthering your education and being a part of a fast paced and encouraging workforce.
Whilst working towards the Junior Data Engineer Role you will learn how to help build tools, services and how to transform data to make it available to analysts, data scientists and users.
Successful applicants will have good analytical skills and take a positive approach to solving problems., * Have left full-time education
- Not be in receipt of funding for other learning programmes
- Have the right to work in the UK
- Have valid and eligible residency status and be resident in the UK for 5 years before the start of their apprenticeship
To be able to qualify for the qualification (Software Engineering Degree Apprenticeship) you will need to meet the minimum entry requirements for the course which are set out below. Within your personal statement please ensure you include any qualifications you have completed or are currently studying towards.
Minimum entry requirements:
- A Levels: ABB-BBC. If not studying A Level Maths or Physics, applicants must have GCSE Grade B (6) in Maths
- BTEC students: DDD in IT or Computing and Grade B (6) GCSE Maths is required
- Access (Computing): Pass with Distinction overall to include 24 Distinctions (3 of which must be Maths) and 15 Merits at Level 3
- We also require GCSE English Grade 4/C
You will be required to provide evidence that you hold any essential criteria and requierments at some point during the recruitment process. If you cannot provide evidence, your application will be withdrawn.
Required experience:

The programme will provide the opportunity to undertake professional qualifications including Level 4 qualification in Software Engineering., You must have have valid and eligible residency status and have continuous residency in the UK for 5 years before the start date.
The programme will include undertaking a number of qualifications that will require examinations as well as on-team training. There will be regular assessment points to evaluate the progress and proficiency of candidates. You will be assessed at checkpoints throughout the programme, failure to successfully meet the standard during checkpoints could result in 3 months? notice being provided to cease employment. We reserve the right to seek full or partial repayment of costs associated with your qualification, should you not contribute to the programme, or may include related costs such as exam fees, membership fees or materials.
Throughout the programme you will be assessed at key checkpoints. At the end of the programme , you will undertake a final assessment against the EO Data Engineer role. Successful candidates will be considered for appointment to vacancies in this role, subject to availability., Experience ? you will be asked to provide a personal statement (750-word count). Please provide evidence of your Experience of the following:
- Tell us about a time where you were able to communicate and influence others with clarity. Please consider how you were able to respect the needs, responses and opinions of others.
- A time where you worked as part of the team, which you effectively formed partnerships or relationships with people sharing information, resources and support.
- Experience of and exposure to IT, demonstrating your current skill level. Did you solve a problem using simple programming or automation.
- Experience of analysing data to present clear insights to others.
