Job description

As First Engineer Deck, you are responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, repair, and technical performance of all deck and mission systems and equipment under the supervision of the Chief Engineer. You will direct the Shift Leader Deck and work closely with multiple on-board departments, ensuring safe and efficient execution of all deck-related activities.

The Technical Department, under responsibility of the Chief Engineer, is vital to the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. In accordance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, this department ensures compliance with standards for machinery maintenance, energy efficiency, and environmental protection. Its primary role is to maintain and operate all mechanical, electrical, and auxiliary systems on board, guaranteeing reliability and safety at sea.

Within this department, the Deck Engineers are responsible for the maintenance, repair, and safe operation of deck machinery and mission equipment, ensuring compliance with maritime regulations and company standards.

Your role

Your tasks will contain (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Delegating planned maintenance and repair work to the Shift Leader Deck and issuing instructions to deck personnel.
  • Controlling, maintaining, and repairing all deck and production machinery and systems together with Deck personnel.
  • Maintaining all required administration, including logbooks, maintenance systems, and stock documentation.
  • Following up technical modifications through preparation, execution, testing, and completion using Management of Change (MOC) processes.
  • Conducting rounds to monitor equipment status, operations, and ongoing work.
  • Leading fault-finding on deck and mission equipment.
  • Ensuring project safety inductions and toolbox talks are completed by all Deck team members.
  • Reviewing and setting up maintenance schedules with maintenance engineers, suggesting improvements where needed.
  • Monitoring equipment performance and identifying opportunities for improvement and cost savings.
  • Participating in incident investigations, audits, and vessel vetting.
  • Fulfilling duties on the station bill, including ship security tasks.
  • Creating a safe, social, and positive working environment and coaching Deck personnel.
  • On pipelay vessels: reparing equipment according to project requirements, monitoring the pipelay process and optimising operational settings.
  • On heavy lift vessels: assisting the Chief Engineer in reviewing construction manuals and heavy lift plans.

You will also have the authority to take decisive action in emergencies, act as Area Authority where designated, and exercise Stop the Job authority in line with company standards.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years' experience as Second Engineer Deck or Shift Leader Deck.
  • At least 5 years' of deck experience, including 2 years on a DP vessel with diesel-electric propulsion.
  • Extensive knowledge of pipelay processes, cranes, hydraulics, industrial automation, and wire ropes.
  • Full compliance with all STCW requirements as per internal certification standards.
  • CoC with competency level III/2 "Chief Engineer with no limitations."
  • Mechanical engineering education (BSc preferred).
  • B2 level English proficiency (spoken and written).
  • Strong computer literacy, including MS Office.
  • Completion of all training and qualification requirements according to the Allseas Entry Level Matrix.
  • Leadership, strong problem analysis skills, and decisiveness.
