Job description

The Senior AI Augmented Software Engineer role will lead a new way of building software as the team moves to an AI-first approach, using tools such as Claude Code to design, build, and shape features that accelerate the achievement of business objectives.

As a senior member of the technology team, the role holder will be responsible for the full software development life cycle for specific projects from discovery, coding, testing, deployment, DevOps, observability, and cybersecurity. They will also mentor and support other members of the team, driving best practices in AI-augmented development.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively communicate progress on projects, blockers, and project timelines to Head of Engineering and Product & Delivery Lead
  • Use cutting-edge AI coding tools, particularly Claude Code, to design, implement, and improve features on our EQUAL platform
  • Work across domains (product, design, data, DevOps, cyber security) to understand problems and ship valuable solutions quickly
  • Translate business goals into precise prompts, specifications, and tasks for AI tools, then refine and review the generated output
  • Ensure high quality deliverables through appropriate unit testing, automated checks, and documentation of systems and decisions
  • Suggest and implement improvements in systems, processes, and developer workflows, especially where AI can remove friction
  • Work with the team to ensure that AI tools are used consistently and appropriately across the team, including agreeing patterns, guardrails, and good practice
  • Keep on top of the latest developments in AI tooling and practices so that The Skills Network stays at the cutting edge of AI-assisted software development
  • Perform internal code reviews, focusing on maintainability, logic, and general software best practice
  • Mentor junior colleagues, helping them to grow their skillset and adopt AI-augmented development practices
  • Manage delivery of features and bug fixes, following the department development procedure within agreed timescales

Requirements

  • Expert-level proficiency in at least one programming language, with evidence you can learn new languages quickly
  • Significant experience writing and maintaining unit tests or other automated tests in any language or framework
  • Ability to take a feature or problem from idea through to production, including design, implementation, testing, and deployment
  • Strong interest in AI tools for software engineering, with a clear view on their strengths, weaknesses, and appropriate use
  • Comfortable reviewing and editing AI-generated code and content, rather than blindly accepting outputs
  • Excellent collaboration skills when working with cross-functional teams and stakeholders
  • Clear, concise written and verbal communication, including reporting on progress, trade-offs, and technical constraints
  • Demonstrated ability to balance delivery speed with code quality, security, and long-term maintainability
  • Habit of applying engineering best practices: version control, code review, documentation, and sensible testing
  • Architecture fundamentals - able to reduce complexity, understand concurrency and distribution
  • A track record of delivering architectural decisions and being comfortable describing the real business value behind those decisions
  • Experience mentoring or supporting more junior team members

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience using AI coding assistants (for example Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar) in your day-to-day work
  • Exposure to modern DevOps practices (CI/CD, infrastructure as code, monitoring, incident response)
  • Exposure to secure coding practices or application-level cyber security concerns
  • Experience working across different parts of the stack, or a track record of picking up new tools rapidly
  • A genuine interest in education and the impact of technology and AI on how people learn
  • Knowledge of additional programming languages - polyglot programmers tend to bring excellent practices from other ecosystems
  • Cloud experience, preferably Azure as we leverage many of its services
