Job Title: Software Developer (Python/AI/Automation)
Clearance: BPSS (must be eligible)
Contract: 6 months
Rate: Dependent on experience/Negotiable (Inside IR35)
Location: Flexible, with occasional travel to Newcastle (expenses covered)

Overview:
- We're supporting a central government department on a major transformation programme, aiming to modernise and centralise how financial support services are delivered across the UK.
- This is an Alpha phase project, meaning you'll be involved right at the early stages - shaping, experimenting, and helping define the future state of a large-scale national service.
The Role:
- You'll be working closely with architects and engineering teams to research, design and prototype solutions for a new, centralised platform.
- This is a hands-on engineering role with a strong focus on Python development, automation and emerging AI capabilities, rather than purely BAU delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with architects to explore and define solution approaches
- Contribute to the design of workflow orchestration and service architecture
- Support the development of web portal solutions and user-facing components
- Help shape and design data models and schemas
- Build and prototype solutions using Python and modern development practices
- Explore and implement automation and AI-driven approaches, including AI-assisted development
- Work within Agile teams during the discovery and prototyping phase
Skills & Experience Required:
- Strong hands-on experience with Python development
- Exposure to or interest in AI/machine learning/AI-assisted development
- Experience with automation and system integration
- Understanding of modern software architecture and scalable systems
- Experience working in Agile environments, particularly early-stage or discovery phases
- Ability to work collaboratively with architects and technical stakeholders
Desirable Experience:
- Experience working within UK Government or public sector environments
- Exposure to workflow orchestration tools or frameworks
- Experience designing data models or working with complex data structures
- Interest or experience in emerging technologies and innovation-led projects
Additional Information:
- Occasional travel to Newcastle may be required for sprint ceremonies (expenses covered)
