Job description
We are looking for a Senior Linux Infrastructure Engineer to join IBM, with eSC or eDV Clearance required. In this role, you will help build, automate, and support modern cloud-native and hybrid platforms for IBM's public sector and defence clients. You will work across AWS, Azure, IBM Cloud, and Red Hat technologies, designing high-performance containerised environments using Kubernetes, Docker/CRI-O, and Infrastructure as Code.
You will work closely with development, architecture, security, and SRE teams to deliver scalable, secure, and reliable platforms for modern applications.
This position is open to engineers from mid-level through senior and principal levels, with responsibilities adjusted according to experience.
What You'll Do

Build, automate, and operate container platforms using Kubernetes, Docker, and CRI-O.

Deploy and manage infrastructure across multi-cloud and hybrid environments (AWS, Azure, IBM Cloud, Red Hat).

Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Ansible, and cloud-native IaC tools.

Implement high availability, disaster recovery, load balancing, and hybrid networking solutions.

Integrate monitoring, SLOs, and quality gates into CI/CD pipelines to support resilient delivery.

Administer Red Hat OpenShift clusters and support migrations to container platforms.

Collaborate with architects and developers to enhance automation, performance, and security.

Depending on seniority, contribute to technical leadership, shape DevOps practices, and mentor engineers.
Requirements
You should have solid hands-on experience in Linux engineering, AWS, and modern container platforms, along with a proactive mindset to build skills in any remaining areas.
Containerisation and Orchestration.

Operating and managing Kubernetes clusters, including deployments, scaling, networking, upgrades, and security.

Practical experience with Docker and CRI-O container runtimes.

Experience administering OpenShift and supporting migrations to container platforms.
Cloud Platforms (AWS-Focused)

Strong experience with AWS services, with the ability to work across other clouds such as Azure or GCP when required.

Exposure to hybrid and on-prem environments, including modernisation of legacy systems.

Understanding of VPC design, IAM and identity controls, and hybrid networking.
Automation and Infrastructure as Code

Experience using Terraform and/or Ansible for Linux platform automation.

Familiarity with AWS CloudFormation or other cloud-native IaC tools.

Working knowledge of CI/CD tooling such as GitHub Actions, GitLab, Jenkins, Azure
DevOps, or Tekton.
Observability and Reliability

Experience using monitoring and logging tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, CloudWatch, or Azure Monitor.

Understanding of high availability, disaster recovery, load balancing, and resilience approaches.

Awareness of SRE and GitOps methods.
Security and Compliance

Knowledge of platform security, Linux hardening, secrets management, and identity tooling.

Experience integrating security controls into build and deployment pipelines.
This role is subject to pre-employment screening in line with the UK Government's Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). An additional range of Personal Security Controls referred to as National Security Vetting (NVS) may apply, this could include meeting the eligibility requirements for The Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV).
Preferred technical and professional experience
- A strong foundation in Linux systems administration, with supporting knowledge in areas such as networking, security, or databases.
- Experience running and supporting production workloads on AWS, including on-call support, incident response, and root-cause analysis.
- Hands-on automation of security or compliance tasks on Linux or AWS platforms, such as vulnerability remediation, scanning, or policy-as-code.
- Experience integrating traditional Linux infrastructure with AWS services and containerised environments.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with architecture, development, operations, and security teams.
