Job description
We are seeking an experienced z/OS Mainframe Systems Programmer to support mission-critical federal environments. This role provides full lifecycle support of IBM mainframe infrastructure, ensuring high availability, security, performance, and disaster recovery readiness within large, complex enterprise systems. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise across z/OS systems programming, Parallel Sysplex operations, and enterprise mainframe tooling, with recent hands-on experience supporting modern z/OS releases., Provide day-to-day systems programming support for z/OS 2.5 and z/OS 3.1, along with related IBM and third-party products Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain IBM z/OS components, including:
JES2, SMP/E, TCP/IP, VTAM RACF security environments IBM Workload Scheduler
Support multi-LPAR Parallel Sysplex environments, including Coupling Facility operations Perform system performance monitoring and tuning using SMF, RMF, and related tools Administer and optimize:
Storage management (DFSMS, DFHSM, VSAM, DFSORT) Hardware configuration (HCD, IODF/IOCDS)
Prepare and execute IPLs, system parameter updates, and HMC profile changes Support and coordinate Disaster Recovery (DR) planning, exercises, and audits Integrate with enterprise security and compliance tools to support federal requirements Provide technical support to engineering teams and contribute to structured documentation and knowledge transfer using Microsoft OneNote Support middleware and UNIX System Services components, including:
CICS USS (OMVS, zFS, NFS, Apache) Networking and debugging tools
Requirements
Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience Recent (within the last 6 months) hands-on experience with z/OS 2.5 and/or z/OS 3.1 10+ years of experience as a z/OS Systems Programmer in large enterprise or federal environments
Strong experience with: Parallel Sysplex & Coupling Facility JES2, SMP/E, TCP/IP, VTAM RACF security administration SMF/RMF performance analysis
Experience supporting IBM mainframe hardware platforms z13 through z17 Proficiency with COBOL, Assembler, and REXX for utilities and automation Strong documentation skills and ability to collaborate across technical teams
Desired Qualifications Experience with IBM Workload Scheduler (v10 or above) Familiarity with security enhancement and compliance tools in regulated environments Exposure to hybrid architectures integrating mainframe and distributed platforms Understanding of modern DevOps practices applied to mainframe operations
