At Applied Materials, we care about the health and wellbeing of our employees. We're committed to providing programs and support that encourage personal and professional growth and care for you at work, at home, or wherever you may go. Learn more about our benefits.
As a Systems Engineer, you'll design, integrate, and optimize complex systems that drive the semiconductor industry forward. Your expertise in systems thinking and problem-solving is essential as you collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop advanced solutions to intricate processes and writing system specifications. You'll be responsible for analyzing requirements, defining system architectures, conducting thorough testing, and ensuring seamless integration of subsystems. Additionally, you'll identify and mitigate risks, confirming that our systems meet the highest quality standards and exceed customer expectations.
Within Applied Materials' Sustainability Center of Excellence, we develop measurement-driven understanding of semiconductor process emissions to enable meaningful reductions in greenhouse gases (GHGs) and other byproducts across the industry. Measurement credibility is foundational to our impact., Technical Leadership & Measurement Strategy
- Design engineering authority on the development of emissions measurement systems (GHGs and reactive process byproducts)
- Define measurement strategies appropriate for laboratory, pilot, and manufacturing-adjacent environments
- Establish best practices for handling uncertainty in experimental data
- Provide technical guidance and review for experimental plans, data interpretation, and conclusions
Method Development & Standards Aligned Practices
- Develop and formalize quantitative measurement methods, including calibration strategies and validation approaches
- Define requirements for:
- Data quality, traceability, and uncertainty analysis frameworks
- Method documentation with change control
- Calibration and verification practices
- Measurement repeatability, reproducibility, and sensitivity assessment
- Drive internal readiness for accreditation as a testing and calibration laboratory
Product Development & Technology Enablement
- Partner with hardware software, and process engineering teams to establish robust measurement tools that are adopted by high volume customers
- Understand and translate customer data and analysis requirements into clear specifications and capability for our tools
- Determine instrument requirements for measurement solutions considering tradeoffs between measurement fidelity, complexity, and adoption in product environments
- Own roadmaps for new measurement capabilities and data products
Communication, Standards & External Engagement
- Communicate complex measurement requirements clearly to non-spectroscopists, including engineers, product leaders, and executives
- Author and review technical reports, internal standards, and method documentation
- Represent Applied Materials in external collaborations and industry forums to help level-set emissions measurement practices
- Influence emerging industry measurement standards through data-driven technical input
Requirements
We are seeking an experienced metrology engineering lead to own product development for tools that characterize process emissions in high-volume semiconductor manufacturing environments. This role is ideal for an experienced individual contributor who combines hands-on product management experience with metrology technical expertise and who can help to develop next gen tools and methods that are robust, repeatable, auditable, and product-relevant., * 7-10 years relevant industry experience
-
B.S. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field
-
Proven track record launching metrology products adopted in high volume semiconductor manufacturing environments
-
Product development or technology transition experience
-
Extensive hands-on experience with semiconductor metrology equipment, including quantitative gas analysis; FTIR and/or QMS a plus
-
Demonstrated leadership in measurement system design and method development
-
Understanding of spectroscopy fundamentals, practical limitations, and uncertainty analysis
-
Clear technical communication skills across disciplines and seniority levels
-
Willingness to travel internationally up to ~10%
-
Prior involvement with industry standards organizations (ISO, IEC) and certification/accreditation processes
Benefits & conditions
The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members.
