Position Summary The Network Support Specialist is responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting the state data, voice, video, and wireless networks. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy. Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain campus LAN network hardware/software
  • Manage IP subnet and VLAN assignments
  • Maintenance of LAN fiber and copper infrastructure
  • Monitor network performance to determine if adjustments need to be made
  • Collaborate with other IT professionals on Networking-related IT projects
  • Installation and maintenance of Ethernet-based TCP/IP networks, including switches, routers, and subnet/VLAN management
  • Monitor life cycles and maintain an inventory of network hardware
  • Schedule and perform network maintenance tasks
  • Ensure network documentation is complete, current, and available to appropriate personnel
  • Provide support to other IT staff as needed
  • While this is primarily a daytime role, occasional on-call and after-hours work (including some nights and weekends) may be necessary to support critical operations or resolve urgent issues.

Requirements

  • Documented recent experience managing a network in a mid-to-large-scale environment, including wired and wireless topologies
  • Understanding of core network concepts, such as VLANs, DHCP/DNS, VRFs, and LACP
  • Knowledge of application transport and network infrastructure protocols/topologies
  • Experience with 802.1x authentication and other network access control methodologies
  • Knowledge of IPv6 preferred
  • Ability to create accurate network diagrams and documentation
  • Strong understanding of network infrastructure and network hardware
  • Familiarity with network applications, such as VoIP, encryption, etc.
  • Problem-solving skills (reasoning, intuition, and persistence)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with highly technical vendors and support engineers, as well as non-technical end users

Required Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in an Information Technology-related field with a network engineering focus
  • 3+ years of recent networking experience

Preferred Education and/or Experience

  • Experience with Extreme Fabric Connect, IS-IS, and SPB (Shortest Path Bridging)
  • Experience managing Enterasys and/or Extreme Networks switches
  • General experience with network security, such as firewalls, VPN, VRFs, SSL/TLS, etc.
