Job description

At Humana, a Fortune 100 healthcare technology leader, our Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) platform is a critical engine supporting millions of members, pharmacists, and clinical partners. As a Lead Software Engineer, you will serve as a technical authority within a modern, agile engineering organization-driving architectural direction, elevating engineering quality, and delivering scalable backend and API solutions that power real healthcare outcomes.

This role is ideal for a seasoned backend/API engineer who thrives on solving complex problems, coaching other engineers, and leading the development of reliable, enterprise grade platforms.

What You'll Do

Lead Technical Delivery & Refinement

  • Guide story refinement and technical planning, breaking down complex initiatives into clear, actionable, and scalable backend/API work while partnering closely with product and architecture.

Build & Maintain Mission-Critical PBM APIs

  • Design, implement, and evolve high-performance, secure APIs and backend services that power Humana's PBM ecosystem, ensuring reliability, scalability, and exceptional data integrity.

Champion Engineering Quality

  • Drive engineering excellence through rigorous code reviews, best-practice coaching, automation improvements, and proactive identification of performance, quality, and reliability risks.

Own Security, Scalability & Architecture Execution

  • Ensure systems meet enterprise-grade security, performance, and architectural standards while collaborating with architects to align implementations with long-term technical strategy.

Guide Documentation & Technical Communication

  • Maintain clear, comprehensive technical documentation-including API contracts, architectural diagrams, and operational runbooks-and communicate risks, tradeoffs, and decisions effectively across teams.

Mentor & Elevate the Engineering Team

  • Coach engineers through technical challenges, improve engineering maturity within the squad, and foster a culture centered on craftsmanship, learning, and continuous improvement., To ensure Home or Hybrid Home/Office employees' ability to work effectively, the self-provided internet service of Home or Hybrid Home/Office employees must meet the following criteria:

At minimum, a download speed of 25 Mbps and an upload speed of 10 Mbps is recommended; wireless, wired cable or DSL connection is suggested

Satellite, cellular and microwave connection can be used only if approved by leadership.

Employees who live and work from Home in the state of California, Illinois, Montana, or South Dakota will be provided a bi-weekly payment for their internet expense.

Humana will provide Home or Hybrid Home/Office employees with telephone equipment appropriate to meet the business requirements for their position/job.

Work from a dedicated space lacking ongoing interruptions to protect member PHI / HIPAA information.

Requirements

You're a backend-focused engineer with a passion for:

  • Building resilient, secure, enterprise-scale APIs and data flows

  • Leading technical work across cross-functional agile teams

  • Making smart architectural tradeoffs

  • Improving code quality, engineering culture, and developer experience

  • Mentoring engineers and helping teams deliver at a higher level, + 8+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, ideally within large-scale or enterprise environments

  • 2+ years of technical leadership experience (team lead, senior lead, tech lead, or similar)

  • Strong backend API development skills and experience with modern engineering practices (automated testing, CI/CD, cloud-native design)

  • A passion for building solutions that directly improve the healthcare experience for millions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field

  • Experience with cloud platforms, distributed systems, or healthcare/PBM systems

  • Familiarity with enterprise integration patterns, event-driven architectures, or scalable data access strategies

Benefits & conditions

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.

$129,300 - $177,800 per year

This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
