Job description

Design and implement assigned GIS projects supporting the generation of customized maps and geographic analysis reports; maintain and update geographic data in the City's Geographic Information System (GIS); and provide geographic information to City departments, outside agencies and the public.

Job Descriptions are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below)

  1. Utilize ArcGIS software to edit, analyze, model, and display geographic data in the form of tabular reports and/or customized maps.
  2. Meet with end users to determine GIS needs and output format. Design, implement, and monitor assigned projects to ensure client needs are met.
  3. Participate in the design and development of new GIS database layers; perform database maintenance on assigned GIS database layers.
  4. Provide geographic information to the City Council, other City departments, outside organizations and the public; respond to telephone inquiries for geographic information.
  5. May assist with the creation of current Zone and Address Atlases; participate in the maintenance of the official City GIS data used in these atlases.
  6. May perform map digitizing and record data from record drawings, plats, and property descriptions.
  7. Convert files generated in computer-aided design (CAD) software of plats into the City standard GIS format and coordinate system; work with applicants to ensure that the submitted files meet City requirements.
  8. Prepare to modify (add, edit, delete) GIS features from various GIS database layers representing a multitude of different infrastructure assets, geo-spatial records, and inventory.
  9. When applicable, Collect filed plats from the County Clerk's Office and research any changes to City surroundings that affect official maps; take appropriate action to include information in maps.
  10. Develop special symbols, legends and logos for use as indicators on maps; update new landmarks to include in maps.
  11. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within assigned area; provide directions as needed.
  12. Provide informal GIS training and technology transfer to other City department staff as needed; participate in citywide meetings to assist in facilitating knowledge of assigned division goals and objectives.
  13. Attend staff meetings as required; coordinate work schedules to ensure projects are completed in a timely manner.
  14. Maintain awareness of applicable revisions to GIS software; learn new revisions and apply information to GIS tasks and projects.
  15. Importing and exporting tabular datasets to and from ArcGIS software and other tabular dataset software like MS Excel

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Develop and prepare statistical and analytical geographic reports.
  2. Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of computer-graphics production and infrastructure and/or planning mapping.
  3. Supply graphic information to various agencies and the general public.
  4. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in geographic information systems(GIS), computer science, geography, planning or cartography; and

Two (2) years of GIS editing, cartography or urban geography experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire. Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire. Environmental: Office environment; exposure to computer screens.

Physical: Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods of time.

Requirements
