Job description

The mission (https://www.nytco.com/company/mission-and-values/) of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It's why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It's why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it's why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it's worth paying for.

About the Role:

The Stories team within the News Products group at the New York Times owns the major digital journalism surfaces at the Times. These surfaces include Articles (https://open.nytimes.com/reimagining-the-new-york-times-digital-story-experience-ff698541ac09) , Live Blogs (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/22/insider/live-coverage.html) , Newsletters (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/09/insider/newsletters-briefing.html) , Visual Formats. The team's ownership extends from CMS editing tools through to the reader presentation.

We are looking for a full-stack software engineer eager to work in a news-driven environment. You will join a cross-functional team of engineers, designers, and product managers. Together, you will shape impactful experiences for our readers and build the next-generation suite of systems and services that power The Times' news coverage.

The main technologies used on our team include React, JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, Go, Express, GraphQL and Firestore.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead full-stack feature development from design to production, building high-quality, scalable systems that serve both readers and editors while adapting to rapid news cycles.

  • Collaborate with designers, product managers, and engineers to prototype news-driven features, implement platform migrations as part of our modernization effort, and bridge technical and product needs.

  • Ensure system excellence by deploying, operating, and troubleshooting reliable and secure code in partnership with your team.

  • Provide production support and join our on-call rotation for our reader-facing experiences and newsroom tooling.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence (https://www.nytco.com/company/mission-and-values/) and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the Senior Engineering Manager for News Stories.

Requirements

  • Full-stack technical background with expertise in one or more areas of the stack

  • 2+ years of experience building large-scale full-stack web applications and features using modern JavaScript frameworks (React) and backend languages (Node.js, Java, Go)

  • 2+ years of experience with web fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, web performance, accessibility)

  • Experience with one or more data persistence technologies (SQL, NoSQL, Firestore)

  • Experience with troubleshooting and resolving issues in a production environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using public cloud platform services such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

  • Experience with DevOps practices, including CI/CD techniques and tooling (e.g. Drone, Jenkins), automated testing and deployments, observability and monitoring

  • Understanding of caching and content delivery

  • Experience operating in an Agile and nimble environment

  • Experience using AI coding tools, especially for agentic workflows

This role requires limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
