Job description
The Infrastructure Services unit brings together and integrates the engineering and implementation of core, foundational campus IT infrastructure, delivering essential IT services that support UC Berkeley's continually evolving needs., Maintaining centralized data storage facilities for enterprise servers and other campus computer systems is a core activity of Data and Platform Services (DPS) in Berkeley IT, Campus IT Infrastructure (CITI). In this role, DPS provides enterprise storage services on a recharge basis to customers everywhere on the Berkeley campus and other UC campuses. These customers are in the Berkeley IT units such as network, database administrators, application programmers, information security, and EOS. This team also works with LBNL, HAAS, Library, and other departments/researchers/labs across UC Berkeley.
The Storage System Administrator is responsible for the Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure, Network Attached Storage (NAS), Object and cloud storage and all components needed to run these environments. The Administrator plans and implements installations and upgrades, develops and applies data storage policies and procedures, and provides assistance and problem resolution for system administrators and customers who use bIT data storage services.
Backup/recovery of computer systems data is a core activity of DPS. In this role, DPS provides enterprise backup and recovery services on a recharge basis to customers across the Berkeley campus. The Storage System Administrator role in UCBackup is responsible for the backup servers and associated equipment, storage media and application software. The Administrator plans and implements backup system installations and upgrades, develops and applies data protection policies and procedures, and provides assistance and problem resolution for system administrators and customers who use UCBackup services., * Researches and implements systems, services and technology solutions to support the Enterprise Storage systems and services, along with UCBackup software and environment. Implements system or device enhancements such as software, hardware and network configuration, updates and installations for projects or services of moderately complex scope. Support the storage services through scripting, automation, testing on various physical devices, and deployment into production.
- Manages centralized servers and makes recommendations for purchase or upgrade of new computer/storage related hardware.
- Implements computers, storage and networking systems.

- recognizing areas for improvement of services.

Requirements
- Self-motivated and works both independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
- Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
- Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
- Has knowledge of cybersecurity best practices (firewalls, certificates, etc.).
- Has knowledge of NFS, SMB, iSCSI, and Object (S3) storage best practices.
- Has knowledge of Fibre Channel Network (Brocade switching, SANnav, etc.).
- Has experience supporting VMware infrastructure for storage.
- Has basic TCP/IP networking skills.
- Knowledge of storage technologies that may include NetApp, Cloudian, Loadbalancer.org, Brocade SANnav, Hitachi, Wasabi, and Pure arrays technologies.
- Knowledge of enterprise backup software, such as Commvault, Cohesity, Veeam
- Knowledge of design, development, and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
- Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs.
- Demonstrated understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.
- Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner across the organization and at varying levels.
- Has knowledge and abilities associated with problem identification and resolution.
- Has knowledge necessary to design, set-up, operate, and correct malfunctions involving application of enterprise storage and backup technology systems.
- Has knowledge of both on and off prem Cloud storage solutions (AWS, Azure, and GCP).
- Has basic scripting knowledge.
- Has knowledge of other areas of IT (Linux, Windows, and Project Management)
Preferred Qualifications
- General knowledge of ITIL Foundations and all functional areas of a large IT organization.
