Senior Data Engineer

Overview

A senior, hands-on data engineering role within a growing data and analytics team undergoing platform modernisation. The role combines deep technical delivery with strong stakeholder engagement, feature ownership, and mentorship responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Own complex end-to-end ETL pipelines using Python and SQL Design and develop data solutions across a cloud-based data lake using a layered (Bronze/Silver/Gold) architecture Build and maintain SQL objects (stored procedures, views, complex queries) Translate business requirements into clear, well-specified data features Produce and maintain technical documentation (solution designs, data dictionaries, runbooks) Act as a quality bar for engineering standards through code review and design input Keep stakeholders informed on progress, delivery, and dependencies Coach and support less experienced engineers Contribute to data architecture and future platform direction Actively use AI tools to accelerate development, improve quality, and enhance documentation

Technology Environment

Primary cloud platform: Microsoft Azure Core tools and services may include: Azure SQL Cloud data lake/analytics services (eg Synapse or equivalent) Data orchestration tools CI/CD and version control systems Familiarity with modern analytics platforms and BI tooling desirable

Essential Skills & Experience

Strong commercial experience with Python and SQL (mandatory) Production-grade ETL development (logging, error handling, testing) Experience with cloud data lake architectures Orchestration, CI/CD, and collaborative development workflows Experience leading data feature specification with business stakeholders Ability to write clear, maintainable technical documentation Proven experience mentoring or supporting other engineers AI-first mindset for modern data engineering workflows

Desirable Experience

Data platform migration or re-platforming Integration of AI/LLM capabilities into data workflows Experience in regulated or data-intensive industries BI reporting experience Familiarity with Kanban or similar delivery approaches
