Job description

This role supports the Articulated Trucks group within Hauling Applications at Caterpillar. The Software Engineer will design, develop, test, and deploy embedded software solutions for off-highway vehicle applications. This is a senior-level position focused on C++ and Linux-based development, with robotics and ROS experience considered a strong plus., * Design, develop, and implement embedded software solutions from requirements through production and commercial deployment.

  • Develop and maintain C++ applications running on Linux-based embedded systems.
  • Analyze and enhance system performance, stability, scalability, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support integration with vehicle systems and hardware platforms.
  • Review technical requirements and project requests to help estimate scope, effort, and timelines.
  • Support testing, debugging, and validation of embedded software in real-world off-highway environments.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional experience developing software in C++.
  • Strong hands-on experience working in Linux environments (embedded Linux preferred).
  • Experience developing software for embedded or real-time systems.
  • Background in off-highway, automotive, industrial, or heavy equipment applications is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute at a senior technical level.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Robotics experience (vehicle automation, autonomy, or mobile robotics preferred).
  • Experience with ROS / ROS2 is a plus (publish/subscribe models, nodes, topics, system integration).
  • Candidates with strong robotics and ROS project experience may be considered with slightly less overall experience.
