As a Software Engineer Lead - Mainframe; Retail/Deposit within PNC's Retail Technology organization, you can be based in Pittsburgh, PA; Strongsville, OH; Cleveland, OH; Birmingham, AL; Phoenix, AZ; Lakewood, CO.

PNC will not provide sponsorship for employment visas or participate in STEM OPT for this position., The Retail Deposit Mainframe team supports mission critical mainframe applications that enable both batch and high volume online transaction processing for Retail Deposit products. Key applications include COS (front end interfacing application for Retail Deposit Accounts), SDB (Safe Deposit Box), and CBS (Check Billing System for automatic check reordering). The team is responsible for application development, system integration, production stability, and ongoing modernization of legacy online interfaces.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead development and support of mainframe applications supporting both batch and online processing in a Retail Deposit environment.
  • Design, develop, and enhance robust online transaction processing solutions, including complex interfacing beyond basic inquiry transactions.
  • Own and support CICS-based online applications, with strong usage of CICS Queues and integrations via z/OS Connect to distributed APIs.
  • Drive changes through the full lifecycle: development, testing, migration, and production deployment, including post-implementation monitoring.
  • Provide hands-on leadership while remaining technically engaged, balancing development and leadership activities (50/50).
  • Participate in on-call and production support, including supporting changes introduced by the team and monitoring system behavior after release.

Requirements

  • Strong experience with mainframe applications supporting both batch and online processing.
  • Batch processing experience including Endevor and mainframe utilities (e.g., File-Aid, Easytrieve, and similar tools).
  • Deep, hands-on CICS online transaction processing experience, including advanced use of CICS Queues.
  • Proven experience with z/OS Connect to integrate mainframe systems with distributed APIs.

Online Processing & Integration (Critical)

  • Demonstrated internal knowledge of online processing, not limited to user-facing transaction screens.
  • Ability to design, troubleshoot, and explain online interfacing applications and processing flows end-to-end.
  • Strong understanding of legacy systems with extensive online integrations and real-time processing considerations.

Leadership & Ownership

  • Experience leading technical work while remaining hands-on in development.
  • Ability and desire to mentor and guide other engineers.
