Job description

We are seeking a high-performing, self-driven Staff Systems Engineer to lead end-to-end system architecture and technical oversight for EV charging communication. This role is responsible for designing, integrating, and validating charging protocols and standards across the full ecosystem-including the vehicle, charging station, and backend systems-to deliver a seamless Plug & Charge (PnC) experience.

You will serve as the technical owner connecting vehicle software with backend and charging infrastructure, ensuring interoperability, scalability, and compliance with industry standards.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Own and define the end-to-end charging communication system architecture, spanning vehicle software, charging stations, backend services, and mobile applications.
  • Lead the development of solution requirements for non-mechatronic charging features, including AC/DC charging behavior, PnC, V2G/V2H capabilities and their interactions with GM Cloud.
  • Work with multiple charge point operators (CPOs) to ensure interoperability and identify integration gaps early in the development lifecycle.
  • Support functional decomposition and allocation of product, feature, and system functionality to software and compute platform teams.
  • Collaborate closely with software engineering, systems teams, validation, UX, mobile, back-office, cloud, manufacturing, and suppliers to deliver integrated charging solutions.
  • Support issue triage, root cause analysis, and resolution for complex charging and protocol issues during development, integration, and testing.
  • Ensure alignment with safety, cybersecurity, regulatory, and charging protocol standards (e.g., ISO 15118, CCS, DIN 70121).
  • Create and maintain system documentation, including requirements, interface specifications, and traceability, and support program milestones and readiness reviews.
  • Actively participate in ISO Standards committee discussions on enhancements and new feature standards impacting vehicle charging, V2H, and V2G functionalities., This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Engineering (Electrical, Computer, Software, Mechatronics, or related).
  • 8+ years of experience in systems engineering, embedded software, EV charging, connectivity, or a related development domain.
  • Expert in systems and software architecture, embedded software development, and testing methodologies.
  • Experience with requirement tools such as DOORS / DNG and Rhapsody.
  • Experience with Agile or SAFe development methodologies.
  • Understanding of CI/CD automation strategies and continuous testing.
  • Experience with Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Behavior-Driven Development (BDD).
  • Highly proficient at analyzing unusual and complex issues while driving results in an ambiguous and fast-paced environment.

People Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of interpersonal skill to work effectively with people in other functions and regions.
  • Demonstrated organizational agility and ability to work effectively in cross-functional environments.

Company Vehicle:

Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate.

Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
