Job description

The Principal Engineer, Advanced Manufacturing Technologies provides strong technical contributions and subject-matter expertise to support the Global Automation Engineering group's impact on company performance., The Principal Engineer, Advanced Manufacturing Technologies in the Global Automation Engineering group is an experienced technical contributor, working effectively and collaboratively with all technical disciplines and functions, both internally and externally. This role supports the development and implementation of manufacturing technologies and processes that improve product quality, operational performance, and manufacturability for existing and new products. The Principal Engineer, Advanced Manufacturing Technologies is required to support design, build, implement and sustain cost-effective manufacturing equipment and processes, as well as support continuous improvement of existing processes and transformations to meet the needs of a very dynamic and technically challenging business., Individual contributor with deep technical mastery in advanced manufacturing technologies with a focus on discrete component assembly. Applies strong technical knowledge in the specification, design, development and implementation of automated equipment for assembly and packaging processes of Impella products. Supports advanced manufacturing technology projects aligned with new product development, end-to-end continuous improvement efforts, and supply chain capacity intervention.

Works collaboratively with cross-functional teams and technical leadership to evaluate manufacturing technologies and methods, contributing to engineering structure, operational efficiencies, and final deliverables. Serves as a key technical resource on automation projects operating within established engineering and quality frameworks., * Serves as a technical lead or key contributor on medium to large automation initiatives, supporting equipment specification, supplier selection, FAT/SAT, installation, startup, and validation activities

  • Key contributor to major automation scale-up initiatives as a technical lead. Leverage experience in the designing, specifying, selecting, manufacturing acceptance, installation, startup, commission, and validation of fully automated and advanced discrete component assembly and / or packaging technologies.
  • Partners with New Process Introduction (NPI) Teams during early program phases to identify potential process capability issues, prioritize learning plans for relevant product specifications and implement best practice procedures for equipment qualification.
  • Partners with Process Engineering to develop source of variation learning plans for related process development work; develops methods for testing and troubleshooting system defects; takes ownership of process robustness for successful validation master plan execution.
  • Demonstrates commitment to Johnson & Johnson's Credo and Abiomed's Patient First Culture in daily work and project decisions.

Physical Requirements

  • The successful candidate will be expected to travel domestically and internationally. Length of travel will depend on the initiative being implemented and phase of the project. Anticipated travel is estimated at 15%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or like engineering field. Masters degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in automation design and process development including component assembly and automated joining technologies.
  • Best practice procedures for equipment qualification. FDA acumen in a medical device or regulated industry is a plus, preferably with class II or III products.
  • Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Cost (DFC) experience a plus.
