Job description

As a Cloud, Virtualisation and Systems Engineer, you will sit on the engineering frontline across our client estate - supporting hypervisor clusters, Linux and Windows workloads, SaaS platforms, and cloud-native services. You will handle escalations, work tickets end-to-end, support remote and onsite troubleshooting, and contribute to the design and improvement of the platforms we run.

This is a hands-on, technically demanding role suited to an engineer who is comfortable across virtualisation, Linux, networking, and SaaS administration in equal measure, and who is keen to deepen their exposure to OpenStack and open source infrastructure tooling in a fast-paced MSP.

You will also participate in a weekend and bank holiday support rota, providing technical coverage during those periods. Weekend and bank holiday shifts are compensated separately above base salary.

Role Details

  • Location: London, Liverpool Street (fully office-based, 5 days per week, with onsite client and data centre visits as required)
  • Contract: Full-time, Permanent
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday, with weekend and bank holiday rota participation (separately compensated)
  • Work Authorisation: United Kingdom required

What You Will Do

  • Administer and troubleshoot VMware vSphere / ESXi environments - cluster operations, vCenter management, DRS/HA, vMotion, snapshots, datastore and storage troubleshooting, and host lifecycle management
  • Operate and support hybrid virtualisation estates spanning VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, and KVM-based hypervisors, including capacity planning and performance analysis
  • Build, manage and troubleshoot Linux servers (Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL/Rocky/AlmaLinux) - package management, systemd services, networking, file systems, permissions, log analysis, and shell scripting
  • Support private and hybrid cloud workloads on OpenStack (Nova, Neutron, Cinder, Glance, Keystone, Horizon) alongside public cloud services on Microsoft Azure and AWS
  • Administer SaaS platforms across the client base - Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, Defender), Google Workspace where applicable, and other business-critical SaaS tooling
  • Manage hybrid identity across Active Directory, Entra ID (Azure AD), and Linux-side authentication (SSSD, LDAP, Kerberos) - including user provisioning, group policies, OUs, conditional access, and SSO
  • Configure and troubleshoot Fortinet firewalls, IPSec/SSL VPNs, and perimeter security - including segmentation, policy design, and integration with virtualised network fabrics
  • Diagnose and resolve networking issues across DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, and overlay/SDN constructs (VXLAN, virtual switches, distributed switches)
  • Work with open source tooling across monitoring, automation, and infrastructure-as-code - for example Zabbix/Prometheus/Grafana for monitoring, Ansible/Terraform for automation, and Git for version control
  • Support and administer 3CX telephony systems including extension management, call routing, and fault diagnosis
  • Own complex support incidents end-to-end - from initial triage to resolution and client communication - across telephone, remote tools, and structured ticketing systems
  • Attend client sites and data centres for escalated incidents, infrastructure support, hands-on hardware assistance, and onsite engineering tasks as required
  • Maintain accurate documentation of configurations, resolutions, and known issues, and contribute to internal knowledge sharing and runbooks, This role is an opportunity to work at a genuinely global MSP, supporting complex and varied client environments across healthcare, professional services, and technology sectors. You will get deep, daily exposure to enterprise virtualisation, Linux infrastructure, SaaS platforms, and the open source ecosystem we increasingly build around - with a clear path into cloud and OpenStack workstreams.

We offer a team culture that is collaborative, technically ambitious, and built around continuous development. You will work alongside experienced engineers and leadership who are invested in your growth and in the quality of the service we collectively deliver.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years' experience in an IT engineering or infrastructure support role with demonstrable technical depth
  • Strong hands-on experience with VMware vSphere/ESXi - VM lifecycle, vCenter, snapshots, resource pools, networking, storage, and troubleshooting at the hypervisor layer
  • Solid working knowledge of Linux server administration (Ubuntu/Debian and/or RHEL family) - command line proficiency, systemd, networking, package management, log triage, and basic shell scripting
  • Practical experience administering SaaS platforms, with Microsoft 365 across the full suite as a baseline
  • Strong working knowledge of Windows Server (2016/2019/2022) - administration, roles, and troubleshooting
  • Solid working knowledge of Active Directory - user management, GPOs, OU structure, and access control
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting firewalls and associated security policies (Fortinet preferred)
  • Strong network troubleshooting capability - DNS, DHCP, IP addressing, VPNs, VLANs, routing, and switching
  • Confident in hardware diagnostics and resolution across endpoints, peripherals, and rack-mount infrastructure
  • Proven experience with telephone support and structured ticketing systems
  • Onsite client-facing experience with the professionalism and communication skills that come with it
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure, and deliver consistently
  • MSP background or experience supporting multiple concurrent clients - this is essential, not optional

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to OpenStack (Nova, Neutron, Cinder, Glance, Keystone, Horizon) or comparable private/open source cloud platforms (e.g. Proxmox VE, oVirt, CloudStack)
  • Experience with KVM/QEMU or libvirt-based virtualisation outside of VMware
  • Familiarity with containerisation and orchestration - Docker, Podman, Kubernetes (vanilla, Rancher, or OpenShift)
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code and configuration management - Terraform, Ansible, Salt, or Puppet
  • Familiarity with open source monitoring and observability stacks - Zabbix, Nagios, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/OpenSearch
  • Exposure to Azure Active Directory / Entra ID, Conditional Access, and cloud identity management
  • Familiarity with MDM solutions such as Microsoft Intune or open source equivalents
  • Experience with RMM and monitoring tools such as Atera, N-able, or ConnectWise
  • Experience with backup technologies - Veeam, and/or open source options such as Bacula, Restic, or Proxmox Backup Server
  • Experience with RDS, VDI, and remote access infrastructure (Citrix, Horizon, or open source equivalents)
  • Previous exposure to healthcare clients in regulated environments (NHS, private medical, radiology)
  • Professional certifications - VMware VCP, Red Hat RHCSA/RHCE, LPIC, Microsoft 365, AZ-104, CompTIA, or OpenStack-related certifications
