Job description

The engineer will be required to deal with projects predominantly in the South East from concept/feasibility stage, through design and construction to commissioning and handover under the guidance of a director. Skills that will be developed include but are not limited to the following:

  • Domestic water design including demand calculations to BS and IoP standards
  • Domestic water and drainage pump capacity sizing
  • Above ground foul and rainwater design (gravity fed systems)
  • Fire sprinkler design
  • Design and specification of renewable technologies
  • Detail development of concept designs (RIBA Stage 2) to include equipment selection and specification etc, to completion of construction stage information (RIBA Stage 5)
  • Liaison with architects, clients, structural engineers and contractors

Their Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health design team is expanding rapidly, and this is an opportunity to make an impact on a key service line within an established business. Role: We are looking for a talented and ambitious Building Services Design Engineer to join our Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health Design Team. Working with long standing clients, you will be exposed to a depth and breadth of projects across all sectors, including commercial, retail, public sector, education, health and residential. The successful candidate will require the ambition to ensure they always deliver the highest quality of work within their expertise as well as always ensuring professionalism throughout project completion. As a Senior MEP Building Services Engineer, you will need to be able to effectively liaise with clients and stakeholders to manage expectations whilst maintaining and building new relationships for the company. You will be the technical leader when it comes to projects you manage. You will have played an active part in the development of junior engineers and will manage the engineering output for each project. Working with the Director you will assist in managing financial deliverables and will play a lead in project bids.
  • Supporting Director / Team Leader in the development and management of the MEP team.
  • Supporting Director / Team Leader in the delivery of MEP design commissions.
  • Supporting wider team in the delivery of MEP design commissions.
  • Develop Technical knowledge to be able to give guidance to others across a variety of sectors.
  • Regular client exposure across multiple sectors.
  • Development and mentoring of junior engineers.
  • Collating and organising technical services information from designers / team leader.
  • Undertake site visits to include surveys for technical due diligence, to capture information to inform MEP design and monitor installation and commissioning.
  • Investigating and offering technical advice on factors that affect building services, including user needs and regulatory requirements.
  • Liaising with other construction professionals in-house and external, including Architects, Surveyors, etc.
  • Coordinating detailed design information Preparing designs and specifications for construction work.
  • Contributing to meetings and document preparation.
  • Visiting sites to check progress and inspect work.
  • Researching new design processes, building legislation and technology.
  • Drive to support Net Zero Carbon through undertaking energy analysis and thermal modelling and conducting research., The Client: Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Consultancy drawing on 50 years' experience providing Building Services Engineering support to the property industry. They have a dynamic and enthusiastic team of MEP and sustainability experts providing Design and Project Management (Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health), Maintenance Management, Dilapidation Surveys, Technical Services Management, Sustainability/Energy Services, Expert Witness & Feasibility Studies to the built environment. Role: As the Mechanical Associate, you will lead and oversee the Mechanical Engineering aspects of various building services projects. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, you will be responsible for developing creative solutions that meet our client's needs while adhering to industry standards and sustainability principles. Your technical expertise and leadership will be instrumental in guiding our projects from concept to completion. Responsibilities:
  • Manage and oversee the mechanical design team within the London office.
  • Take the lead in mechanical engineering design and development of building services projects, making sure all applicable regulations, guidance, and best practices are adhered to.
  • Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, electrical engineers, and other stakeholders to develop integrated, holistic solutions aligning with the project's vision and objectives.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing and continuous learning within the team.
  • Conduct thorough assessments, evaluations, and feasibility studies to identify project requirements, technical challenges, and potential risks.

Their position in the market place brings together 50 years of building services experience with cutting edge virtual engineering. They are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer (on a contract basis) to join their busy team in Cambridgeshire for a minimum of three months. The role will involve:
  • Acting as project leader on selected projects
  • Working as part of a larger team on certain projects.
  • Attending principal meetings and making client presentations on selected projects.
  • Raising/promoting the level of technical excellence relating to mechanical engineering within the team.

Requirements

  • British or European citizen or otherwise working rights in UK
  • Degree in mechanical engineering
  • Minimum 5 years as Public Health Design Engineer with a consulting engineering firm in the UK
  • Good design skills
  • Revit MEP
  • BS EN 12845 and BS 9251 sprinkler systems
  • Fire hydrant design to BS 9990 and BS 750
  • Dry and wet risers to BS 9990
  • Working knowledge of building regulations, especially Parts G, H and L
  • Working knowledge of British Standards, + BSc / BEng (Hons) or MSc / MEng in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Service Engineering or Public Health.
  • CIBSE Membership.
  • Interest in sustainability and net zero carbon, ideally with some understanding in sustainable design or building physics and associated software.
  • Demonstrable understanding of MEP systems within buildings.
  • Full Clean Driving Licence.
  • Ability to work under own initiative and within a team setting.
  • Willing to travel by car and / or public transport in support of day-to-day work.
  • Confident in talking to a wide range of people to build relationships and develop new work streams.
  • Interest in achieving commercial sustainability qualifications such as Low Carbon Consultant, BREEAM, WELL., + Bachelor's or Master's degree holder in Mechanical Engineering, preferably with a focus on Building Services Engineering.
  • Preferably registered as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with membership of a relevant institution, i.e. CIBSE
  • 7+ years' experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer with some experiencing managing and mentoring.
  • Good knowledge of MEPWorx, AutoCAD, IES, and Microsoft Office.
  • Ideally knowledge of Bluebeam Revu, and Revit.
  • A track record of managing and completing medium to large-scale projects successfully.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant codes, standards, and regulations in the building services industry.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with a meticulous approach to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and adapt to changing project requirements.
  • Strong leadership abilities, with the capacity to motivate and inspire team members.
  • Adhere to ethical standards and maintain confidentiality in handling sensitive project information.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex technical information to diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven dedication and commitment to sustainability and green building practices., + A degree qualification - Mechanical or building services (Chartered or working towards). An HNC or HND with suitable design experience will also be considered.
  • Significant experience of design in building services, post qualification completion.

The design work varies from developing concept designs to Stage 3 for planning purposes to fully detailed design, contract and construction drawings.
