Job description

This is not just a management role - it's a strategic leadership position in Tesla's data ecosystem. You'll operate at the intersection of systems engineering, data science, and product development, ensuring that every engineer, regardless of discipline, can access the right data, in the right way, at the right time. You'll directly enable breakthroughs in predictive maintenance, energy optimization, safety improvements, and product design. What You'll Do

  • Lead and scale a high-performing, cross-functional team of data engineers, platform engineers, and analytics developers
  • Define and execute the long-term technical strategy for Tesla's end-to-end data platform - from ingestion and ETL (Kafka, streaming) to storage (S3, Parquet, Iceberg), query (Trino, Spark), and application layer (React, Superset, Jupyter, Airflow)
  • Own the self-service data experience - building tools, frameworks, and APIs that empower hundreds of engineers across disciplines to analyze petabytes of fleet data without dependency on central teams
  • Champion first-principles thinking in platform design: eliminate complexity, automate the mundane, and build systems that are reliable, efficient, and extensible
  • Partner with product, firmware, and hardware teams to define data needs, enable real-time diagnostics, and drive data-informed improvements in vehicle behavior, control algorithms, and system reliability
  • Drive platform reliability, scalability, and cost-efficiency across AWS and multi-datacenter environments - with a focus on zero-downtime data pipelines and sub-second query latency for critical use cases

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 4+ years in technical leadership managing teams building large-scale data systems
  • Proven experience leading teams that build both infrastructure and data products - from backend systems to full-stack web applications
  • Expertise in data technologies such as: Kafka, Spark, Trino/Presto, Parquet, Hudi, Iceberg, Airflow, Docker, Kubernetes
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, Scala, Java or Go
  • Experience with Cloud and On-Prem Infrastructure
  • Demonstrated ability to balance technical depth with strategic vision, and to communicate complex systems to engineers and non-technical stakeholders alike
  • A track record of delivering high-impact, scalable applications
  • A bias for action and intellectual humility

Benefits & conditions

208,000 - 312,000 USD paid holidays, flex time, 401(k) United States, California, Palo Alto Apr 13, 2026 What to Expect

At Tesla, data isn't just a byproduct - it's the engine of innovation. From Autopilot and vehicle performance to energy grid optimization, Supercharger reliability, and Tesla Insurance, every product generates massive streams of real-world data. The Data Platforms & Analytics team is at the heart of this ecosystem - building the systems, tools, and insights that enable engineers across the company to understand, improve, and evolve Tesla's products at scale.

You'll lead a dual-track team that owns both the core data infrastructure (platform, pipelines, storage, query engines), and the data productization layer (applications, dashboards, self-service tools, analytics frameworks).

You'll drive the evolution of a unified data stack that spans from raw IoT data ingestion (vehicles, Superchargers, energy systems) to actionable insights used by firmware engineers, product designers, and AI researchers. Your work will directly impact product quality, safety, efficiency, and customer experience - across every Tesla product., Along with competitive pay, as a full-time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits at day 1 of hire:

  • Medical plans > plan options with $0 payroll deduction
  • Family-building, fertility, adoption and surrogacy benefits
  • Dental (including orthodontic coverage) and vision plans, both have options with a $0 paycheck contribution
  • Company Paid (Health Savings Accounts) HSA Contribution when enrolled in the High-Deductible medical plan with HSA
  • Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
  • 401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plans, and other financial benefits
  • Company paid Basic Life, AD&D
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance (90 day waiting period)
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Sick and Vacation time (Flex time for salary positions, Accrued hours for Hourly positions), and Paid Holidays
  • Back-up childcare and parenting support resources
  • Voluntary benefits to include: critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, theft & legal services, and pet insurance
  • Weight Loss and Tobacco Cessation Programs
  • Tesla Babies program
  • Commuter benefits
  • Employee discounts and perks program

Expected Compensation $208,000 - $312,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
