Job description

Lilly is constructing multiple advanced API manufacturing facilities to support current and future products across new modalities. This includes greenfield sites with several standalone, highly flexible GMP drug substance facilities - along with supporting site infrastructure, utilities, laboratories, administrative offices, and warehousing. These facilities will produce drug substances spanning small molecules, biologics, and nucleic acid therapies.

The Digital Automation Engineer will be part of the Corporate Engineering Technology Center, specifically Global Process and Control Engineering (GPACE). This role will be part of a team that develops central automation solutions to streamline and reduce cost of delivery for large scale capital projects in the Drug Substance (API) manufacturing network. These solutions include, but not limited to, CLASS Module library for DeltaV and other applications, digital transformation tools, and building delivery applications integrating AI that eliminate manual work. The role will also be involved in developing a strategic profile for these solutions with a strong focus on DeltaV DCS and associated digital tools.

GPACE (Global Process Automation & Control Engineering) Lilly's corporate automation team is responsible for automation standards, measurement and process control solutions, training, and capital project delivery support across the global manufacturing network.

Key Deliverables and Responsibilities

  • Become a subject matter expert on Lilly's DeltaV CLASS module library and support updates and new software to support the digital agenda.
  • Support and/or lead the development of a Digital strategy for DeltaV transformation tools and associated AI applications.
  • Develop and manage use cases with a focus on streamlining DeltaV delivery and CSV.
  • Support DeltaV architecture design utilizing current reference standards, replication opportunities, and best practices.
  • Interface with cross-functional disciplines and stakeholders to ensure project deliverables align with and meet business requirements

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related applicable science discipline required
  • 5+ years of experience in Process Automation with experience on the Emerson DeltaV Platform
  • 5+ years of experience in API/Drug Substance manufacturing preferred - related manufacturing experience will be considered
  • Experience in translating process and operational needs into digital requirements
  • Previous experience in DeltaV Batch DCS
  • Experience within a GMP environment, regulatory requirements and computer system validation principles

Additional Skills & Preferences

  • Programming experience with Python - including automation scripting, front-end design (IBT), command-line execution, data transformation, and structured data workflows (JSON/Excel)
  • Strong automation and OT operations background (DCS engineering, batch manufacturing)
  • Experience with system integration including MES - prior AVEVA PI experience preferred
  • Technical knowledge in process instrumentation, batch control, and data historians
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams and influence without direct authority
  • Ability to collaborate work cross-functionally with different disciplines and cultures
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate's education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is $66,000 - $171,600

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
