Job description
Duties of the Oceanographic Data Specialist will include the following:
The Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) requires technical and scientific support in monitoring, reviewing, and analyzing the diverse suite of oceanographic and meteorological data that CO-OPS collects and in detecting, diagnosing, and troubleshooting any data or station issues that arise. This work involves investigating missing, suspect, or erroneous data on an as-required basis in accordance with CO-OPS Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and performing quality control of oceanographic and meteorological data collected in support of CO-OPS and its partners.
Requirements
- The individual supporting CO-OPS CORMS must possess a demonstrated knowledge of oceanographic, meteorological and other scientific methodologies and principles; in particular, how to process, analyze, and disseminate physical oceanographic data sets, assess observing sensor operability, and troubleshoot suspect data issues.
- Must possess a Bachelor of Science degree in oceanography, meteorology, or related physical science field, and have at least four years of relevant professional experience. (Eight years of relevant experience in operational oceanography can substitute for this degree requirement).
- Must have the ability to review large volumes of data and identify technical oceanographic issues using existing software and data management tools.
- An ability to communicate clearly and effectively with CO-OPS personnel and users of CO-OPS information is also required.
- MUST be able to work 12 hour shifts and routinely work nights, weekends, and occasionally on holidays.
