The successful students will be forming a team, with the aim of developing an escape room experience playable in virtual reality (VR). Through this role you will need to work together as a game development team to design and prototype a VR Escape Room, and then identify and utilise various tools and technologies to implement a working build of this idea. The intention of the VR Escape Room will be to showcase the capabilities of high-end VR devices, and teach something useful to an undergraduate student. Each student on the team will be allocated one of the following roles, based on their application. Depending on the role allocated, you will be responsible for:

  • Designer: As the game's designer, you will be responsible for prototyping game concepts, ideas and mechanics, and formally communicating these through design specifications. There is also an opportunity for a designer to be involved in environment and/or level design.
  • Artist: As the game's artist, you will be responsible for producing or sourcing suitable assets (e.g. 3D modelling). There may also be an opportunity to work with visual effects and cinematics, depending on the direction of the game.

Through this role, you will develop transferable skills in communication, problem solving and teamworking. You will continue to build on your specialist technical skills, learning more about the tools and technologies involved in game production, and how these work in an interdisciplinary environment. Tools may include Unity, Unreal Engine, Maya, Blender, GitHub, Jira, etc. You will also develop skills and experience in playtesting and working with a team on a real-world game prototype. This is the ideal opportunity to develop a collaborative, interdisciplinary piece of work for your portfolio. Dates: 8 June 2026 - 10 July 2026. Hours of Work: 20 hours per week, flexible around your availability. Details of briefing: You must be available for an initial briefing meeting at 10am on Monday 8th June 2026 on campus.
