Job description

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Applications Engineer will act as the technical interface between Added Scientific and its clients. The role combines hands-on technical work with client-facing activities, including product demonstrations, training, and applications development.

This is a varied role suited to someone who enjoys working directly with users, developing new applications, and helping shape how a new technology is used in practice. While product development is handled by an internal engineering team, this role ensures our products meet client's needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the technical point of contact for clients, understanding the requirements and translating them into effective 3D printing solutions.

  • Communicate and collaborate with clients to understand technical requirements and recommend appropriate solutions where you will assess client applications and recommend appropriate materials, technologies and design approaches.

  • Provide pre-sales and post-sales technical support, including product demonstrations and training.

  • Develop and maintain application documentation, technical guides, and best practices.

  • Assist in product configuration, installation, and integration with customer systems.

  • Work closely with engineering and product teams to relay client feedback and drive improvements.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve application-related issues promptly.

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Support field service teams with complex technical challenges.

  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and potential clients.

  • Work with the technical team to understand product features and communicate value propositions

  • Attend industry events, conferences, and exhibitions to represent the company across the UK and Europe

You will be a practical, technically strong individual who is comfortable working directly with clients in a research or engineering environment where you will play a key role in bridging the gap between client requirements and technical delivery. You should enjoy explaining how systems work, helping users solve problems, and developing new applications, while also being able to work independently and take responsibility.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related field) or equivalent experience.

  • Strong understanding of materials, processes and design for manufacture

  • Good working knowledge of Additive Manufacturing or 3D printing systems

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a practical, solutions-driven mindset.

  • Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to a range of audiences.

  • Willingness to travel to customer sites and events as required

  • Ability to take ownership and work both independent and as part of a team.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with inkjet printing, binder jetting, or materials development platforms

  • Familiarity with research, academic, or industrial R&D environments

  • Experience delivering training or client-facing technical support

  • CAD, scripting, or data analysis skills (e.g. Python)

  • Experience in a small or fast-moving organisation would be an advantage.

  • DfAM knowledge desirable, * Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related field) or equivalent experience

Our expertise lie particularly in material and binder jetting and photocurable-based AM. We are now entering an exciting new phase as we transition into a product-focused company. Our current focus is the development of advanced 3D and 2D inkjet printing platforms, including custom printhead drive electronics and complete printing systems. These systems are designed for research and development teams working on new materials and devices. We are a small, technically focused team, and this role is central to how our products are demonstrated, adopted, and used by our clients.
