J Harlan Group is currently conducting a search for a Lead Software Engineer at a prominent Investment Manager in their NYC AI Data Science Labs., They are seeking an experienced Lead Software Engineer to join their Labs' AI Engineering team. In this leadership role, you will guide a talented group of engineers, setting technical direction and ensuring successful delivery of innovative AI solutions. You will work closely with cross-functional teams and senior stakeholders to architect, implement, and scale AI systems that will have an impact across the firm. This is a hands-on - end-to-end engineering opportunity with direct responsibility to Design, Develop, and Deploy autonomous AI systems as part of the firm's AI Data Science Labs' AI Engineering team. Collaborate in cross-functional squads, contribute to the Build-Operate-Transfer process, and help scale responsible AI solutions across the enterprise. What makes the role unique is that some of these systems incorporate AI-powered components, such as retrieval, agent-driven workflows, and automation. The position does not involve AI research or model training. Instead, it focuses on practically integrating modern AI tools into enterprise-grade software systems in a responsible, scalable way. The AI Data Science Labs is focused on building the firm's next-generation data and AI platforms, aiming to seamlessly deliver on-demand ML-powered insights across their firm. Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of AI systems, providing technical mentorship and oversight to engineering squads.
- Collaborate in cross-functional squads, drive the Build-Operate-Transfer model, and ensure responsible AI solutions are scaled across the enterprise.
- Partner with business stakeholders to develop agent-driven workflows that automate complex processes and generate actionable insights.
- Champion engineering excellence by establishing and enforcing best practices in AI development, continuous integration, and code quality.
- Oversee projects on agent orchestration, prompt engineering, and real-time, data-driven automation.
- Prioritize and manage technical debt, driving ongoing improvements in AI platforms and infrastructure.
- Proactively identify and pursue opportunities to apply AI agents for increased business value and operational efficiency.
Business Knowledge:
- Engage directly with business stakeholders to thoroughly understand organizational needs, strategic priorities, and evolving market demands.
- Make informed technology decisions that align with the firm's long-term strategy, organizational objectives, and fiscal responsibility.

Requirements
This opportunity is available in both their New York City offices and at their brand-new AI Data Science squad in their new Baltimore location. Both locations offer the opportunity to collaborate with top talent, drive innovation, and make a real impact on asset management, * BS or MS in Computer Science or a related technical field (or equivalent experience), with 8+ years of progressive professional development experience in object-oriented languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), including demonstrated leadership of engineering teams.
- Extensive hands-on expertise in architecting and delivering cloud-native solutions using AWS or Azure, containerized microservices, and agent frameworks.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to guide teams through complex technical challenges.
- Able to communicate with and influence both business stakeholders and technical teams.
- Demonstrated commitment to engineering excellence through setting and upholding standards for automated testing, code reviews, and continuous delivery.
- Results-oriented leader with a passion for mentoring others, fostering innovation, and staying at the forefront of emerging technologies.

Benefits & conditions
SALARY RANGE: The salary range in NYC is $181,000 - $309,000 plus employees may also be eligible for annual discretionary incentive compensation. Actual compensation within that range will be dependent upon the individual's skills, experience, qualifications, location, and applicable laws.
