Job description
The Senior Linux Engineer will join our technology team at a leading retail bank. This role is embedded within the IT Security organization and is responsible for designing, implementing, securing, and maintaining enterprise Linux infrastructure. You will play a critical role in ensuring the stability, integrity, and security of Linux-based systems, with a strong focus on automation, compliance, and operational excellence. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), configuration management, and scripting, along with a security-first mindset aligned to banking regulatory standards., * Install, configure, harden, and maintain Linux-based servers (primarily RHEL) across enterprise environments
- Implement and enforce security best practices, including system hardening, patching, and vulnerability remediation
- Monitor system performance, availability, and reliability; proactively identify and resolve issues
- Automate operational tasks and workflows using Bash scripting and Ansible
- Develop and maintain Ansible playbooks for configuration management, patching, and system provisioning
- Support and manage Linux environments for both traditional infrastructure and vendor-based appliance systems (Linux ISOs)
- Collaborate with IT Security teams to ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulatory requirements
- Manage user access controls, SSH configurations, and secure authentication mechanisms
- Implement and maintain SSL/TLS certificates and secure communication protocols
- Support cryptographic operations and integrations, including key management platforms where applicable
- Partner with application, infrastructure, and security teams to support secure deployments and troubleshooting
- Perform root cause analysis for system incidents and implement preventive measures
- Maintain documentation for system configurations, processes, and security procedures
- Participate in on-call rotations and provide production support as needed
- Contribute to continuous improvement of system automation, security posture, and operational efficiency
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
- 6+ years of experience administering Linux systems in enterprise environments, with strong focus on RHEL
- Strong expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 7/8/9) system administration
- Proven experience with Bash scripting for automation and system management
- Hands-on experience with Ansible for configuration management and automation (required)
- Strong understanding of Linux system internals (processes, memory, file systems, networking)
- Experience with system hardening and security best practices (CIS benchmarks, STIGs, etc.)
- Solid knowledge of SSH, SSL/TLS, and secure communication protocols
- Experience with patch management, vulnerability remediation, and compliance frameworks
- Familiarity with identity and access management in Linux environments
- Strong troubleshooting skills across OS, networking, and application layers
- Experience working in regulated environments (financial services, banking, etc.)
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across technical teams, * Experience with cryptography concepts and key management systems (e.g., Thales, HashiCorp Vault)
- Exposure to certificate management platforms such as Keyfactor
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure preferred, AWS secondary)
- Experience supporting Linux-based vendor appliances and custom OS images
- Knowledge of containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes - nice to have, not required)
- Experience with monitoring tools (e.g., Splunk, Prometheus, Nagios)
- Understanding of DevOps practices and infrastructure as code
- Familiarity with audit and compliance frameworks (SOX, PCI-DSS, etc.)
