Job description
Join BD Group as our Data Protection Officer and lead the transformation of data protection compliance across essential services. You'll build robust frameworks from the ground up while advising senior leaders on critical privacy matters.
What you'll be doing
Compliance & Governance
- Monitor compliance with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and internal policies
- Develop and maintain data protection frameworks, policies and procedures
- Maintain records of processing activities and ensure appropriate documentation is in place
- Conduct regular audits and reviews of data protection practices
Advisory & Risk Management
- Advise the Board, senior management and staff on data protection obligations and risks
- Provide guidance on Data Protection Impact Assessments and risk mitigation
- Advise on lawful processing, data sharing and data retention
- Support investigations into personal data breaches and data protection incidents
Training & Culture
- Develop and deliver data protection training programmes
- Promote awareness of data protection responsibilities across the organisation
- Support a culture of accountability, confidentiality and continuous improvement
Regulatory Liaison & Data Subject Rights
- Act as the primary contact with the Information Commissioner's Office
- Liaise with regulators on compliance matters, inspections and investigations
- Ensure appropriate reporting of personal data breaches
- Oversee Subject Access Requests and other data subject rights requests
- Manage data protection complaints and ensure timely resolution
Requirements
Do you have a valid Certificate in Payroll Practice, Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals certification?, Do you have experience in Communication skills?, Essential Experience
- Significant experience in a data protection, legal, compliance or information governance role
- Experience developing and implementing data protection policies, frameworks and procedures
- Experience conducting audits and monitoring compliance with data protection requirements
- Practical experience managing Subject Access Requests and data protection complaints
- Experience advising senior stakeholders and influencing organisational practice
- Experience liaising with regulators and responding to data breaches or incidents
Essential Knowledge & Skills
- In depth knowledge of UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and associated guidance
- Strong understanding of data protection principles, governance frameworks and compliance requirements
- Knowledge of Data Protection Impact Assessments, processing activities and risk management
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex requirements clearly
- Ability to influence senior stakeholders, including Board members and senior management
- High level of integrity, independence, professionalism and confidentiality
Desirable
- Knowledge of local authority governance and compliance
- Recognised data protection certification, such as GDPR Practitioner, CIPP/E, CIPM, C-DPO or similar
- Degree level education or equivalent experience
