Job description
The Housing Navigator in the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program provides services, including but not limited to connecting Veterans to VA housing and support services. The Housing Navigator provides case management and care coordination, interdisciplinary collaboration, coordination, and consultation, and administrative duties. This position will work closely with the Veteran's primary care provider and members of the Veteran's assigned interdisciplinary treatment team. The Housing Navigator position is responsible for the following duties, 1. Provides permanent housing development for Veterans in the HUD-VASH program by locating suitable permanent housing in the community, maintaining an inventory of safe, available units, communicating with landlords, and conducting outreach to prospective landlords and property management groups on behalf of homeless Veterans.

Provides housing lists for Veterans, conducts housing seminars, and is an essential housing resource person for Veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Assists with direct housing search, which includes meeting Veterans at housing units, both for viewing and for walk-through purposes, providing housing lists to Veterans, marketing HUD-VASH to area landlords, and building relationships with landlords to foster continued and expanded HUD-VASH appropriate housing stock.

Assists Veterans with the housing process, including locating apartments, helping to prepare the application and lease signing, and securing security deposits. In addition, assists Veterans and the HUD-VASH team to acquire and place furniture and accessories in the new apartments as needed.

Communicates with Veteran regarding the progress of housing applications.

Conducts housing inspections to determine if the living situation will be safe, healthy, and adequate for Veteran's needs.

Acts as a housing consultant to HUD-VASH team/staff members.

Acts as liaison between the VA and community resources. This includes coordination between the HUD-VASH team and independent landlords and property management companies as well as rental associations and real estate brokerage companies, community, and government agencies, and/or leadership of corporations involved with the development of affordable housing.

Educates Veterans and their families on community resources and VA benefits.

Provides wellness/prevention education to Veterans and their families.

Participates in meetings relevant to the placement of Veterans in housing units.

Other duties as assigned., Responsible for own work and not required to direct or supervise other personnel but may occasionally instruct or show another employee how to perform work.
Requirements

Honorably discharged veterans are preferred., Associate degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; one to two years of related experience and/or training; or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Hiring preference to honorably discharged veterans. Prior experience with Housing First and Rapid Rehousing preferred.
COMPUTER SKILLS
The ability to understand more advanced computer skills and be proficient in the advanced knowledge of software such as Microsoft Word and Excel, etc.; knowledge of HMIS a plus.
