Job description
Responsible for the development, implementation, and supervision of back-end information technologies and electromechanical sensory systems required by Amtrak's Track Geometry Testing program. Provide a common repository of engineering information and a means of electronic exchange of this information between the various engineering disciplines. The incumbent is responsible for assisting with the introduction of new technologies required to meet Amtrak's track maintenance and inspection needs and provide technical guidance and assistance to engineering managers as they implement these new technologies in track maintenance, construction, and clearances., * Investigate, develop and implement computerized engineering information systems required to meet the engineering department's goals. This may include programming, evaluation of existing products, demonstration of applications, cost & productivity analysis, documentation review and recommendations for purchase.
- Develop programs, software and/or design networks which will provide a common database of engineering information and a means of information exchange and dissemination between the various engineering disciplines. This will include studying the flow of information within the department, quantifying the information needs of the department, and recommending solutions that will meet those needs.
- Assist in investigation of new methods for describing track conditions for maintenance planning and the relationships between track conditions and train dynamics for high-speed operation. Develop new models for the measurement and monitoring of track degradation and maintenance cycles through direct research and testing.
- Coordinate computer and network maintenance and upgrade services. The incumbent will make recommendations to replace obsolete equipment as required and will monitor the utilization of existing equipment to ensure the best allocation of resources.
- Coordinate software utilization and upgrades within the department. The incumbent will make recommendations to replace outdated software as required and will monitor the software used to ensure compatibility and compliance with license agreements.
- Assist in the development of new models and analytical tools to enable data-driven decisions regarding the design, maintenance, and construction of the railroad.
Requirements
- Experience in signal processing, instrumentation, and electromechanical systems
- Experience in design, calibration, and implementation of analog and digital filters
- Experience in sensor fusion and electromechanical sensor dynamics
- Experience in data management, assimilation, analytics, and visualization
- Excellent code reading and debugging skills especially in VBA, SQL, and Python
- Experience in back-end software development
- Documentation and structured programming to support sustainable development practice, * Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- 6 years of relevant work experience., * 2.5+ years of experience working with sensory systems, instrumentation, and relational database management systems (RDBMS) or equivalent.
- 8+ years of relevant experience preferred
- Knowledge and use of software used for large data modeling and analytics. Software experience should include such programs as VBA, SQL, Python, Matlab, PowerBI, Tableau, Survey123, Bentley Assetwise, ESRI, and ArcGIS.
- Qualification in Roadway Worker Protection, AMT-2, FRA Track Safety Standards and/or MW1000, and the maintenance of these qualifications. If not already qualified, the candidate must have the capability and desire to become qualified.
- Experience with data lakehouse platforms such as DataBricks
Environmental Conditions/Physical Demands
- Office and field work environment (rail yards).
- Travel 50%
- Will work occasional nights and weekends, including multiple day stays away from headquarters (~2x per quarter). Inspection systems operate 24/7.

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary.
