Job description

The Student Web Developer is instrumental in supporting the creation, maintenance, and improvement of university websites. This role utilizes the approved content management system and foundational knowledge of front-end web languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The Student Web Developer works in close collaboration with various departments and personnel, offering essential web assistance and basic technical support. This role is characterized by an emphasis on learning, with a keen focus on staying updated with front-end web technologies, accessibility guidelines, web analytics, and SEO., * Assists in creating and maintaining web pages and sites using the approved content management system. Uses HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other related front-end web languages to contribute to UVU public- and internal-facing websites, aligning work with university web guidelines and industry web best practices.

  • Collaborates with assigned departments and personnel to provide web assistance, basic maintenance, and content management. Helps with technical support under the guidance of senior or regular web developers
  • Supports other web developers in organizing and guiding web projects, such as basic website builds. Follows departmental procedures and guidelines, ensuring projects stay within timeline, scope, and standard development methods and functionality
  • Continually seeks to expand knowledge of front-end web technologies, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/jQuery best practices, web accessibility guidelines, web analytics, SEO, and other related skills. Regularly participates in learning opportunities and knowledge-sharing sessions.

Requirements

  • Must be a current UVU student.
  • An Associate's degree, Bachelor's degree, or current enrollment in a degree program related to Computer Science, Information Technology, Web Development, or a closely related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in web development, either professionally or through substantial academic or personal projects.
  • Experience or familiarity with a content management system (CMS) such as WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal.
  • Experience with front-end web languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) in an academic, professional, or personal setting.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design principles
  • Exposure to version control systems, such as Git
  • Familiarity with additional web technologies

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Basic understanding of front-end web languages including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Familiarity with content management system (CMS) such as WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of responsive web design and cross-browser compatibility.
  • Understanding of web standards and accessibility guidelines.
  • Familiarity with SEO principles and web analytics tools.

Skills:

  • Ability to create and edit basic web pages using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Skills in using a CMS to manage and update website content.
  • Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for web-related issues.
  • Good computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Ability to learn new software and technologies quickly.

Abilities:

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Good communication skills to effectively relay technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Good time management skills, able to meet deadlines.
