Junior Front End Developer
Role details
Job location
Tech stack
Job description
We're not going to pretend being small is always glamorous. But it does mean decisions get made by people in the room, not filtered through three layers of management first.
You shape the stack
We're not locked into years of legacy decisions made by a committee. You'll have genuine input into tools, approaches, and how things evolve.
Less noise, more building
You'll spend most of your time actually writing code. We have a couple of in-house projects that are always evolving - you'll get to know them properly and have real input into how they develop.
You're not invisible
Small teams mean real relationships. You'll know everyone, everyone will know you, and your work will be visible and valued.
The Role
We're looking for a Front End Developer to cover maternity leave - with a good chance of it becoming permanent for the right person. We're open on the shape of the role too; full-time, part-time, or something in between. If the fit is right, we'll make it work.
You'll be mainly working on our inhouse developed document management applications. Just good code, good people, and the freedom to do your best work.
What You'll Be Doing
- Building and maintaining responsive front end interfaces, mainly using React
- Own features end-to-end - from initial idea and UX discussion through implementation, testing, release, and iteration
- Contributing ideas - we actually listen, so don't be shy
- Own the front-end release process and ensure smooth, confident deployments
- Monitor production behaviour and proactively improve the user experience based on real data
- Keeping up with emerging tech and bringing fresh ideas to the table
- There is also opportunity to get involved with our cloud infrastructure (AWS experience is a bonus)
Requirements
Do you have experience in React?, * Solid hands-on experience with JavaScript - we work with React, so existing experience there would be an advantage
- A genuine love of learning - we want someone who tinkers, experiments, and stays current
- Detailed eye for UI/UX - you notice when something's slightly off
- Strong HTML fundamentals and a great grasp of CSS
- Familiarity with version control (Git - let's be honest, it's non-negotiable)
- Good communication skills - async, sync, whatever - just keep people in the loop
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of your work
- Daily commute to our Manchester office
Nice to Have (But No Pressure)
- AWS experience - even just a working knowledge goes a long way
- We work with React, Tanstack Query and React Router, so existing experience with those libraries would be helpful (but not required!).
- Any experience with Docker would be an advantage
- Experience with REST APIs and integrating third-party services
- Any open-source contributions or personal projects you're proud of
