Job description

Environment: Multi-discipline, fast-paced environment managing complex, multi-thread infrastructure projects. This role operates in challenging or hostile environments where non-standard hours apply. Project Context: In partnership with the Ministry of Defence (MOD), the Maritime Project delivers critical, secure IT infrastructure solutions onboard vessels within highly compressed and challenging timescales.

Infrastructure & Software Execution

Lead the end-to-end technical delivery of core infrastructure, specializing in the deployment, configuration, and optimization of Windows Server and VMware ESXi/vCenter on Vessel environments. Conduct all technical aspects of hardware and software activities within the maritime environment (both in-factory and on-site at naval dockyards). Deliver end-to-end solutions spanning the bare-metal software build environment, physical hardware installation onboard vessels, data migration, and initial support phases. Participate in formal customer handovers and join the Onboard Engineering Support team to ensure a smooth transition of the infrastructure into live service at multiple UK and worldwide locations.

Primary Duties

Windows & VMware Deployment: Undertake all activities pertaining to the implementation of the software solution across multi-vessel environments, including Active Directory/GPO design, Windows Server Node Builds, VMware vSphere provisioning, Assurance/Commissioning, and Connect to Live/Federation requirements. Infrastructure Maintenance: Execute "Keep Alive" requirements, managing critical WSUS patching, VMware hotfix updates, and firmware upgrades prior to trials and final installation. Hardware Installation: Execute physical hardware installation across multi-vessel environments, including rack mounts, server blade configurations, storage arrays, equipment removals, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), and Harbour Acceptance Testing (HAT). Technical Uplift: Identify personal and team training requirements in line with technical upgrades for specialized defense network nodes (e.g., OpNET & MINERVA).

Core Skills and Requirements

Systems & Virtualization (Primary Focus)

Requirements

Windows Server Expertise: Deep knowledge of Windows Server administration, Active Directory, Group Policy Objects (GPOs), DNS, DHCP, and Windows deployment methodologies. VMware vSphere: Strong working knowledge of VMware environments, including ESXi hypervisor installation, vCenter management, virtual networking (vSwitches), and storage provisioning. Infrastructure & Hardware: Deep product familiarity with enterprise hardware and networking products (including Cisco switching/routing, Riverbed optimization, HP/Dell server blades, APC UPS systems, and associated peripherals like Panasonic, Xerox, Epson, and OKI).

Security Requirements

This role requires the candidate to be eligible and willing to undergo a high level of UK National Security Clearance.
