Job description

The Bioinformatics Support Analyst provides operational, analytical, and user-facing support for biomedical informatics applications that process genomic and clinical research data at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). This role ensures reliable execution of data workflows, supports data quality and system performance, and contributes to continuous improvement through automation, reporting, and collaboration with engineering and scientific teams. The position balances day-to-day operational support with opportunities to learn new research workflows and contribute to their enhancement, develop reporting capabilities, and improve how data-driven applications support research. This is an excellent opportunity for a professional with a bioinformatics background and strong organizational and communication skills to gain exposure to a range of research systems, perform critical data loading and operational support tasks, and engage with users across NIH and the broader scientific community.

What You Will Do:

  • Execute, monitor, and optimize routine data workflows supporting bioscientific, genomic, and clinical data processing
  • Load, validate, and assess data quality across multiple data types, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and consistency
  • Perform smoke testing and validation during application releases, updates, and pipeline changes
  • Troubleshoot user, data, and system issues, including workflow failures, data inconsistencies, and application performance concerns
  • Analyze application usage, data flow, and system performance using queries, logs, and analytics tools to generate actionable insights
  • Develop and enhance dashboards, reports, and lightweight automation to improve visibility into workflows and system health
  • Document processes, workflows, and standard operating procedures, contributing to knowledge sharing and operational scalability
  • Collaborate with engineering and scientific teams to triage bugs, refine requirements, and support enhancements to data workflows and applications
  • Identify opportunities for workflow optimization, automation, and improved data handling, and contribute to implementation efforts
  • Communicate system updates, issues, and insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in bioinformatics, computational biology, biomedical informatics, or a related field, * TWO (2) years experience working with bioscientific, genomic, or clinical data in a research or applied setting
  • Proficiency in Python or similar scripting languages for data processing, analysis, or workflow support
  • Familiarity with data pipelines, batch processing, and workflow orchestration concepts
  • Ability to query, analyze, and interpret data using SQL or similar tools
  • Experience troubleshooting data processing issues and interpreting system logs or cloud-based monitoring tools
  • Understanding of data quality principles and best practices for handling sensitive data (e.g., PHI/PII)
  • Experience using version control systems such as Git
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document processes and explain technical concepts
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD "public trust"; candidates must obtain approved adjudication of their public trust prior to onboarding with Guidehouse. Candidates with an active public trust or suitability are preferred

What Would Be Nice To Have:

  • Exposure to multiple bioinformatics domains (e.g., human genomics, microbial genomics, clinical informatics)
  • Experience with cloud-based platforms or data environments (e.g., AWS, Terra, AnVIL)
  • Familiarity with workflow management tools (e.g., Snakemake, Nextflow)
  • Experience developing dashboards or data visualizations using analytics tools
  • Knowledge of genomic data formats and tools (e.g., CRAM, variant calling pipelines)
  • Experience supporting or improving scientific or research-focused applications
  • Understanding of CI/CD practices and software release processes
  • Experience contributing to workflow or pipeline improvements beyond routine operations
  • Familiarity with public biomedical or genomic databases (e.g., ClinVar, gnomAD, OMIM)
