This position brings structure to a complex and evolving technology landscape and establishes the foundation for mature architecture practices. The Sr. Technical Architect takes a hands-on approach in managing and documenting complex application environments. This role involves leading rationalization efforts to achieve cost savings and simplify the overall system architecture. Additionally, the role designs integration solutions that connect diverse systems, including Legacy and cloud platforms. This role requires someone who thrives in ambiguity, takes initiative, and builds credibility with both technical and business stakeholders. Responsibilities

  • Application Portfolio Management
  • Leads the discovery, inventory, and documentation of enterprise applications.
  • Conducts portfolio assessments to evaluate technical health, business value, and strategic alignment.
  • Maintains an up-to-date portfolio database, including ownership, technology stack, dependencies, costs, and lifecycle status.
  • Develops dashboards and metrics to monitor portfolio health, rationalization progress, and optimization opportunities.
  • Identifies opportunities for consolidation or retirement of redundant, overlapping, or obsolete applications.
  • Supports lifecycle management, including sunset planning, replacement strategies, and migration roadmaps.
  • Application Rationalization & Optimization
  • Drives rationalization initiatives to simplify the application portfolio and optimize costs.
  • Builds business cases for application consolidation, modernization, and retirement.
  • Quantifies and prioritizes technical debt remediation efforts.
  • Assess the total cost of ownership (TCO) to identify high-cost, low-value applications for rationalization.
  • Tracks portfolio reduction metrics and demonstrate measurable cost savings and complexity reduction.
  • Collaborates with business and technical teams to execute rationalization plans, including data migration and decommissioning.
  • Integration Architecture & Ecosystem Mapping
  • Documents the current integration landscape, including application relationships, data flows, and integration patterns.
  • Develops ecosystem maps to visualize dependencies, critical integrations, and system relationships.
  • Analyzes integration architectures to identify risks, single points of failure, and optimization opportunities.
  • Designs target integration architectures using modern patterns (eg, APIs, event-driven) while supporting Legacy systems.
  • Establishes integration standards and patterns for AWS and hybrid environments.
  • Supports integration strategies, including API management, messaging platforms, and data integration tools.
  • Technical Architecture Support
  • Provides expertise during architecture reviews, offering insights on application design, integration patterns, and technology choices.
  • Supports technology evaluations through hands-on assessments and proof-of-concept development.
  • Contributes to the development of architecture standards, patterns, and best practices.
  • Guides major initiatives such as cloud migrations, application modernization, and integration projects.
  • Assess vendor solutions for technical compatibility and portfolio alignment.
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervision of Others: None

Working Conditions: 95% of time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of various Microsoft software/programs), phones, and general office equipment. 5% of time is spent outside of the office visiting vendors' and/or internal customers' sites in addition to attending various conferences and meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
  • 7-10 years of experience in technical architecture, application architecture, and systems integration.
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in solution and application architecture development.
  • Experience in regulated industries (eg, energy, utilities, financial services) is preferred.
  • Certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect, TOGAF, or Application Portfolio Management are a plus.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Expertise in application portfolio assessment and rationalization methodologies.
  • Strong integration expertise across REST APIs, SOAP, and Middleware technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services (eg, EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda) and cloud migration approaches.
  • Integration architecture design across diverse technology stacks.
  • Application discovery and modernization in complex environments.
  • Cloud migration initiatives (AWS preferred) with substantial application assessments or migrations.
  • Ecosystem mapping and technical documentation for large-scale environments.
  • Proficiency in TCO analysis, cost modeling, and migration strategy planning.
  • Deep knowledge of architecture patterns (monolithic, SOA, microservices, serverless) and enterprise integration.
  • Ability to create clear, actionable technical artifacts (diagrams, specifications, data flows).
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with technical and business stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements (eg, FERC, NERC CIP, GDPR, CCPA) and their technical implementation.
  • Broad technical knowledge across Legacy systems and modern cloud-native applications.
  • Self-starter with the ability to navigate ambiguous environments, solve complex problems, and deliver.
