Job description
Intrinsic Resolution is seeking an experienced and security-cleared z/OS Systems Programmer for an on-site assignment in Annapolis, MD. This is a mission-critical role supporting the maintenance, configuration, and optimization of an IBM mainframe environment for a federal client. The ideal candidate is an Annapolis-area resident with an Active Secret Clearance and 8+ years of deep, hands-on experience with z/OS internals, subsystem administration, and enterprise-scale mainframe operations.
This position ensures the stability, security, and performance of mainframe systems across production, test, and development environments in a highly regulated, 24x7 operational context. You will serve as a subject matter expert and Tier III escalation point, driving solutions to complex technical challenges and contributing to modernization and automation initiatives., z/OS Installation & Maintenance
- Install, configure, and maintain z/OS and related IBM system software
- Manage SMP/E processes, including PTF and RSU installations
- Maintain PARMLIB/PROCLIB configurations and plan and execute IPLs
Subsystem Administration
- Support and tune subsystems including JES2/JES3, CICS, DB2, MQ, and IMS
- Troubleshoot subsystem issues to ensure performance and continuous availability
Performance & Capacity Management
- Perform workload analysis using RMF and SMF tools
- Tune WLM policies and provide recommendations to optimize CPU, memory, I/O, and storage utilization
Storage & I/O Configuration
- Collaborate with storage teams on SMS/HSM and DASD management
- Support IODF/HCD updates and validate TS7700/VTL replication
Security & Compliance
- Support RACF rules, digital certificates, and access control administration
- Assist with STIG compliance and vulnerability remediation activities
- Ensure system configurations align with applicable regulatory and security standards
Automation & Operations
- Develop automation scripts using REXX, CLIST, and SA/Ops frameworks
- Support job scheduling and integrate with monitoring and alerting tools
Incident & Change Management
- Provide Tier III support for escalated mainframe incidents
- Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for system and subsystem failures
- Participate in change management processes and disaster recovery testing
Documentation & Collaboration
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and SOPs
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including security, storage, networking, and application teams
- Contribute to mainframe modernization and cloud integration initiatives
Requirements
Do you have experience in Technical writing within technology?, Do you have a Bachelor's degree?, * Active Secret Clearance (required prior to start)
- 8+ years of hands-on experience as a z/OS Systems Programmer
- Deep expertise in z/OS internals, JES2/JES3, WLM, and SMP/E
- Demonstrated experience with one or more subsystems: CICS, DB2, IMS, or MQ
- Proficiency in REXX, JCL, and mainframe utilities
- Knowledge of TCP/IP, VTAM, and network configuration on z/OS
- Experience with disaster recovery, backup/restore, and high availability environments
- Strong diagnostic, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication and documentation abilities
- Ability to operate effectively in 24x7 mission-critical environments
- Collaborative team player with a strong focus on quality and system reliability
- Adaptability to emerging mainframe and automation technologies
- U.S. Citizenship required - no exceptions
- Native or bilingual English proficiency
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with z/OSMF, Ansible for z/OS, and enterprise automation frameworks
- Exposure to security tools such as zSecure and advanced RACF administration
- Mainframe experience in cloud, MFaaS (Mainframe as a Service), or managed hosting environments
- Familiarity with federal compliance frameworks including NIST, STIG, and RMF
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience, * z/OS: 8 years (Required)
- JES2/JES3, WLM and SMP/E: 5 years (Required)
