Job description
We are currently seeking a Data Scientist II for a hybrid work arrangement. This position may be located in Columbus, OH or Crystal City, VA.
Battelle's Health Analytics supports government, academic and private industry clients in the areas of public health, healthcare, national defense, environmental, transportation, and energy.
In this role you will fulfill data analysis needs for complex and unusual problems, and you will work together with other junior staff on small tasks under guidance from senior technical staff. In this role you will be focused on (i) developing technical solutions, (ii) implementing, evaluating, and improving state-of-the-art data analysis pipelines, (iii) developing reports or presentations to report findings to project leaders and clients, and (iv) providing technical expertise to support business development activities.
Responsibilities
The primary job responsibilities for the selected candidate will include:

Design, implement, test, and improve methodologies for solving unusual or complex statistical or machine learning/deep learning problems with minimal supervision and within time and budget constraints

Review literature to identify appropriate methods to solve a statistical or machine learning/deep learning problem, implement those methods, and develop approaches to improve on them

Communicate on a regular basis with project leaders and client stakeholders, as well as interdisciplinary technical teams that include mathematicians, computer scientists, statisticians, epidemiologists, bioinformaticians, biologists, chemists, and engineers

Create technical reports and presentations, describing results with tables, graphs, and software tools in a manner that the client can understand

Present research results to clients and participate in scientific conferences, peer review panels, and increase company visibility through publications

Build relationships with contacts across Battelle in different disciplines, as well as external clients

Support business development efforts including contributing technical material to proposals and helping plan technical budgets and schedules

Maintain excellent communication and interact with both co-located and geographically diverse team members daily

Occasionally travel domestically to client sites and conferences

Plan and carry out appropriate professional self-development activities

Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements

Applicants for this position must be a U.S. Persons, as defined by the U.S. export control laws.

Must be able to obtain and maintain the required clearances required by clients
-
Bachelor's degree (and 2 years' experience) OR Master's degree OR PhD in Statistics, Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or Physics (data analysis focus preferred)

Experience developing machine learning, predictive modeling and AI (NLP, generative AI) workflows

Experience implementing, testing, and validating machine learning or deep learning models using modern analytical and programming tools.

Expertise manipulating and analyzing large datasets

Programming experience in Python, R, and/or MATLAB

Strong algorithmic programming and data visualization skills

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Attention to detail and adaptability

Strong analytical, multitasking, problem solving, organizational, and planning skills

Demonstrated ability to meet competing deadlines successfully
Preferred Qualifications

PhD or Master's degree preferred

Experience with high-performance computing or cloud computing

Experience with code optimization and debugging for implementing state-of-the-art machine learning/deep learning algorithms

Experience developing and integrating AI, machine learning, and natural language processing components into software systems

Experience working with or optimizing databases (SQL, PostgreSQL, NoSQL)

Experience with Battelle, a contract research organization (CRO), or through internships, research assistantships, or applied consulting projects demonstrating proficiency in data analysis and applied analytical methods
