Job description

The Senior SharePoint Online Engineer is a hands-on technical expert responsible for the architecture, administration, automation, and ongoing optimization of SharePoint Online. This role focuses heavily on storage architecture, tenant health, performance, governance enforcement, and PowerShell-based administration, rather than front-end design or custom development.

Core Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior technical SME for SharePoint Online, with supporting knowledge of Teams and OneDrive
  • Architect, maintain, and optimize SharePoint site and storage structures, including:
  • Site collections
  • Hub site models
  • Information and storage architecture
  • Own tenant-level SharePoint administration:
  • Site provisioning
  • Permissions
  • Storage utilization
  • Performance monitoring
  • Identify and remediate architectural, usability, and performance issues in existing SharePoint environments
  • Lead cleanup and rationalization of legacy sites and acquisitions
  • Design and execute enterprise-scale site and document migrations
  • Implement and enforce SharePoint governance standards:
  • Site lifecycle management
  • Naming conventions
  • Metadata and content structure
  • Develop and maintain PowerShell automation using PnP, SPO, and Microsoft Graph
  • Understand and communicate SharePoint platform limitations and tradeoffs
  • Partner with Security and Compliance teams to implement retention, sensitivity, and access controls
  • Evaluate new Microsoft 365 features and assess their impact on architecture and governance
  • Maintain clear technical documentation and architectural diagrams
  • Act as a technical escalation point for complex SharePoint issues

Requirements

  • Deep expertise in SharePoint Online architecture and administration
  • Strong hands-on PowerShell scripting experience (required)
  • Proven experience managing SharePoint at enterprise scale
  • Strong understanding of:
  • SharePoint storage behavior
  • Performance considerations
  • Architectural best practices
  • Experience with migration tools such as ShareGate or AvePoint
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 tenant architecture

Experience inheriting and improving existing SharePoint environments
