Requirements

You could already be working as a Build Engineer, or maybe you're working in a related role (e.g. Developer, QA, IT, Operations) that has allowed you to spend a good portion of your time in this area and you want to get into it more. Either way, you've got experience of building a Continuous Integration or Continuous Delivery pipeline using a mixture of off-the-shelf tools plus custom development of code or scripts.

You're a continuous learner, interested in technology and always looking for ways it can make things better or easier. If there's a new tool or technique out there you want to know about it and evaluate how it can contribute to what you're doing. You're "lazy-in-a-good-way" - you work hard, but you're too smart to keep doing a job you can make a computer do instead.

You're comfortable discussing requirements with multiple stakeholders, throwing your own ideas into the mix and constructively engaging to iterate on requirements and deliver the maximum value for the effort expended.

You're a good team player, comfortable working with others. You recognise everyone has their own priorities, so you work to help others do what they need and enlist their help with your deliverables. You almost always get done what you say you will, and if you don't you take the time to learn from the experience., Must have skills/experience:

  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines
  • Motivated by creating the tools to allow others to independently succeed
  • Fast learner with desire to constantly improve
  • Team player

Advantageous skills/experience:

  • Infrastructure as code (CloudFormation, Helm, etc)
  • Cloud-based CI/CD (AWS CodePipeline, Azure DevOps, etc)
  • Jenkins
  • Bamboo
  • Docker
  • Kubernetes
  • Microservices architecture
  • Programming language (Java, JS, Go, etc)

We look for the following core competencies in everyone we hire at Smart Communications:

  • Analytical Ability - effectiveness in analysing situations and identifying key issues.
  • Planning and execution - monitoring progress, taking action when necessary to rectify situations / meet deadlines.
  • Proactive - taking responsibility for making things happen.
  • Social Magnetism - taking actions, that show awareness of one's own impact on others.
  • Teamwork - collaborating with and promoting collaboration between different parts of the business.
  • Technical expertise - keeping up to date technically within one's own functional area.
  • Adaptability - stability of performance under uncertainty and pressure.
  • Communication & influence - using appropriate interpersonal styles and methods of communication to influence others positively to obtain agreement between different interests.

About the company

Do you fancy working on the sort of ground-breaking product that lifts the bar for an entire industry? Smart Communications has done it before, we're doing it again, and we're looking for a talented, creative and motivated Build Engineer to help. Smart Communications use an automated pipeline to build, integrate, deploy and test software product changes and either deliver them to an internal release environment, or reject them and send back to the development team. The role of the Build Engineer is to maintain and improve this pipeline so that it works faster, more reliably, gives better and earlier feedback, and can be increasingly trusted to automatically look after delivering a high-quality product. Your job is to automate complex build processes, removing manual steps, improving consistency, reliability and agility, throughout the full engineering lifecycle, from feature development to deployment. This requires identifying improvements, researching and implementing innovative solutions using off-the-shelf tools and libraries plus custom code and scripts. About Smart Communications Smart Communications is the only independent company focused 100% on customer conversations for the enterprise, and the only cloud solution ranked as a Leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for CCM.
