project44 is looking for a Senior Software Engineer - Backend to join our engineering team. You will work in a fast-paced Agile environment designing, building, and implementing best-in-class integrations to accelerate how project44 connects to the world's logistics networks. Key accountabilities: What you'll work on

  • Design, build, and operate Back End systems that power decision intelligence capabilities, using AI and analytics to help customers make informed, timely, and confident supply chain decisions
  • Build services and workflows that reduce manual effort and enable action, empowering customers to collaborate more effectively with carriers and partners across the supply chain
  • Own and modernize core platform services, such as identity and access management (IAM) and search infrastructure, ensuring they remain secure, scalable, and extensible as new decision intelligence capabilities are introduced
  • Transform large-scale logistics data into actionable insights and outcomes, supporting use cases such as recommendations, decision support, and automated actions
  • Partner closely with product, data, and design to translate ambiguous customer problems into well-scoped, scalable technical solutions
  • Build and operate systems on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), leveraging managed services to deliver reliable and scalable Back End solutions
  • Take shared ownership of development, testing, deployment, and operations for the systems owned by your team
  • Participate in a team on-call rotation, debugging and resolving issues across your team's services
  • Improve observability, monitoring, and operational tooling to ensure system reliability and a strong on-call experience
  • Contribute to technical design discussions, code reviews, and documentation, helping set a high bar for quality and maintainability within the team
  • Mentor and support other engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance

Requirements

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical decisions through design docs, discussions, and reviews, and collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical partners
  • A strong analytical approach to problem-solving, with comfort navigating ambiguity and making tradeoffs explicit
  • A sense of ownership, curiosity, and resilience - comfortable voicing ideas, incorporating feedback, and iterating toward better solutions

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of professional experience building large-scale, cloud-based systems
  • Strong programming and debugging skills with proficiency in Java

Experience in:

  • Designing and building scalable Java-based microservices
  • Designing and consuming APIs and web services (REST, OpenAPI/Swagger)
  • Working with databases, including NoSQL and/or relational databases (eg, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Postgres, or similar)
  • Working in an Agile software development environment
  • Using AI-assisted development tools for code generation, refactoring, and debugging (eg, Cursor, Claude, GitHub Copilot, or similar)
  • Integrating AI-assisted workflows into daily development while maintaining high standards for code quality, security, and correctness

Desirable and helpful (but not necessary) are experience in:

  • Building event-driven systems and stream-processing pipelines (Kafka, Kinesis, or similar)
  • Containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Designing or working with agentic AI systems, including multi-step or autonomous LLM-powered workflows
  • Familiarity with agentic AI frameworks or patterns (eg, task planning, tool invocation, stateful agents, workflow orchestration)
  • Building platform or framework-level solutions that enable AI-driven automation and decision-making
