Job description
As a Senior Ground Software Development Engineer, you will be part of a small, highly-focused team working to develop and maintain real-time, embedded software for sensor systems. The team members are multi-disciplined and contribute across all phases of systems engineering, software development, integration and test, and metrics. The team works closely with operations personnel to meet unique and continuously evolving development needs.
- Design, develop, test, deliver, and maintain software for cutting-edge satellite ground systems.
- Collaborate with talented teams of engineers, architects, and leaders in an Agile environment, utilizing frameworks like Scrum and Kanban.
- Implement modern DevSecOps and Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) techniques.
- Apply Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) practices on defense projects.
- Work on a breadth of advanced software technologies and techniques, including multi-threaded architectures, AWS web services, containerization, Kubernetes, and microservice software design.
- Develop and troubleshoot Kubernetes clusters using Helm charts, Podman container images, and YAML configuration files.
- Develop test suites using C++ Google Test and Python unit testing frameworks to ensure compliance with performance and interface requirements.
- Integrate fully automated system/unit tests in the Jenkins pipeline to streamline regression testing and ensure reliable releases.
- Work on satellite ground system technologies, including Mission Data Processing and other areas such as cloud architecture, infrastructure/platform as a service, and web-based systems.
- Collaborate with customers to support software installation with new releases, mitigate risks, and resolve discrepancy reports.
- Work onsite in El Segundo, CA., * Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees, as they are essential to the development of our products.
- This position requires a security clearance. DCSA Consolidated Adjudication Services (DCSA CAS), an agency of the Department of Defense, handles and adjudicates the security clearance process. Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and at least 5 years of relevant software engineering experience.
- Experience developing object-oriented software using C++ / C / Python in a Linux environment.
- Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker or Podman, and orchestration tools like Kubernetes or similar.
- Experience with Agile methodology, including frameworks such as Scrum and Kanban.
- An active and transferable U.S. government-issued Secret security clearance is required prior to the start date. U.S. citizenship is required.
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Experience deploying multi-threaded software on Kubernetes clusters using Helm charts, Podman container images, and YAML configuration files.
- Expertise in debugging and resolving application issues on Kubernetes clusters using Kubectl commands.
- Familiarity with Atlassian tools such as Confluence, Jira, and Bitbucket.
- Proven ability to develop and integrate test suites using C++ Google Test and Python unit testing frameworks.
- Experience with fully automated system/unit tests in Jenkins pipelines to streamline regression testing and ensure reliable software releases.
- Experience with satellite ground system software, specifically in areas such as Mission Data Processing.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity, DevSecOps, and CI/CD processes.
- Experience serving as a Product Owner in an Agile environment, including writing and managing user stories in Jira, maintaining a product backlog, and prioritizing tasks for technical teams to align with program goals and timelines.
- Familiarity with tools and practices like sprint planning, backlog grooming, and daily stand-up meetings.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills to interface with customers and support software installation and updates.
Benefits & conditions
The salary range for this role is 95,500 USD - 181,700 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.
